A recent survey made in the USA shows that 1 in 7 Americans has consulted a psychic or fortune-teller. Their number is only a little shy of those who have already gone to a psychologist. But somehow we are much more likely to share with our friends and colleagues that we are going to see a shrink than a psychic. Why is that? Good question. Prejudice, shame, privacy reasons… Whatever it is, we keep this secret to ourselves even though there are a lot of esoteric websites nowadays which are becoming more and more popular. These kinds of sites can help you get answers to your questions; some examples of such sites are Oranum, horoscope and esoteric sites, etc.
Why are we so afraid to admit that we believe in something that can’t be proven by science?
I addressed these questions to Silvia, a former manager of psychic live TV shows and psychic phone lines, who is currently managing an esoteric webcam portal. Silvia, 29, successful and happily married, is a perfect choice for the interview, since she seemingly represents the total opposite of the typical target group you would imagine.
“On the contrary!” – She laughs – “People of all age groups and social statuses go for psychic advice. It is only natural for a human being to be curious. We ask a lot of questions about the present and the future in all spheres of life, not only spiritual. You ask the dentist what happens if you don’t floss your teeth, you check the weather forecast every morning, so why wouldn’t you ask someone for relationship and career advice if you were given the opportunity?”
Yes, but to become a dentist or meteorologist one must study for many years, it is science. And If I want relationship advice, I’d go to a certified educated professional.
“In my opinion, to provide relevant consultation, proper psychological education is not enough, I would expect my counselor to have life experience and general knowledge of people, so in most cases psychic advice demonstrates a perfect blend of both.”
So most questions are about love?
“Not really. Although they would probably never admit it, there are a lot of businessmen, corporate executives and other successful professionals among the clients. For example, there is a well-known Hollywood lawyer who for years has come in for an astrological advice at least 2-3 times a week to prepare for every important meeting. Apparently, having a picture of a personality gives him ideas on how to conduct negotiations. Or team leaders are curious to know who they can trust, and who they should promote, etc.”
How can you be sure that this particular reader is real?
“I will give you a useful tip. First always ask the psychic to tell you about yourself and your current life situation. The answers will help you quickly detect if there is a strong connection between you and your reader. By doing so you do not offend the psychic and you will be able to decide if you wish to continue the reading.”
What can you advise to those who have never tried a reading before?
“Look for esoteric portals (like Oranum) that offer free chat. This helps you choose a psychic before you pay. Think of main questions you seek clarity on before you start the reading.”

How sad. There are many good people out there who have a genuine talent and are helping people every day. I know MANY. I not only do intuitively guided Tarot readings, I also have degrees in psychology and anthropology. I believe that it is important to be well-trained and knowledgeable as well as intuitive. Most of the psychics I know do less harm and more good than some professionals I know for a lot less money! Responsibility is important in both the psychic and the client. A client needs to be ready to hear all the truth not just the pretty parts. If they aren't, even the best psychics are wasting their time trying to help them. However, like every other group in society, we have our good eggs and our rotten apples. Pay attention to your own intuition and only select readers with whom you feel safe and comfortable. Then test what they tell you. Are they accurate? Do you know yourself as well as you think you do? Write down or record readings and see how well they do. Then return to those who do you the most good.
thanks
ok
Psychics and Astrology are both examples of the New Age Fluff that make it hard for anybody to take the counter culture seriously. It's also causes people to shut off to others who may have new/novel and potentially groundbreaking ideas.
Thanks for the article.
I am sure there are fakers out there, but I truly believe that some people have this very special "added dimension" to their lives. So much good can be done for others when it is used wisely. It is a gift from God for some people who receive it.
Ahha - A good few amusing sceptics here. I guess they can see electricity and see the wind! I've known and listened to many excellent mediums and since coming to Canada, a few excellent 1st Nations healers/psychics.
I should have done the 'recommended test' with the last one I encountered from Vancouver. She managed to fluff through some nonsense for 30 minutes and when I stood up, pretended to make a big breakthrough. One cannot judge all psychics by an occasional fake. In their hearts they know that they are dishonest and one can always confront them with this - without causing a scene. She knew I could see through her, but being dishonest, was unethical enough to take my money! Some people give others a bad name - as long as they benefit .... something very common I came across in Vancouver generally.
Steve* LOL, I had forgotten all about that. I'm still waiting for the vile, Allison Dubois to take him up on his offer. And the idiot John Edwards. It's totally shameful just how much money these frauds extract from hopeful & grieving people. Con artists basically. Aren't there any laws in place that protect consumers from fraud or deceit with intent to make a profit? There should be. Psychics? Pfft, whatever.
