Rewarded for Being Vegan

Sue: My asthma – which I thought would kill me by the time I was 40 – disappeared completely in just a few weeks. From the constant use of two kinds of inhaler and being threatened with steroid injections I went to wheeze-free and I haven’t needed meds for 17 years. I also stopped having colds. I get the occasional sniffle but never anything serious. I get what I call colds but they only last 24 or 48 hours and are nothing like the ones I used to get before I went vegan.

Julie: I switched to a vegan diet for the animals. Nothing else. I had no idea the health benefits that would follow! My goodness. IBS: gone! Migraines: gone! What I thought were allergy symptoms: gone!

David: I used to get sick a lot. Since becoming Vegan I don’t… ever. And this is also because the mind is now cleansed of confusing internal debate. Going Vegan is like a breath of fresh air and life just makes sense!

Robin: My husband thinks it has relieved his arthritis. He mentioned this in passing and I googled it and found out veganism has often been cited as a contributing factor in alleviating arthritis.

Billy: Many! Indigestion, gas, bloating, constipation (I was lucky if I went to the bathroom twice a week), hemorrhoids, depression, skin problems, aching joints, tooth decay, bad breath, and that’s just a few caused by dairy products. Since I ditched that killer, I am a new man! I never ate meat anyway so I know dairy was the culprit.

I almost made it...

what could I live on to put sufficient variety into my diet?

Please would some of the many vegans here explain how I could stay healthy on a vegan diet with the following problem?

I do not want to eat anything that could be GM or GM contaminated. I also try to stay clear of palm oil because of the destruction of rain forests. So far you agree...BUT... I cannot swallow any form or leafy green veggie, or related plants such as cauliflower. I was force fed on them as a child with the result that if I get even a speck of this stuff smaller than my little finger nail in my mouth, it brings about a violent retching reaction! It is truly horrible, and there is No Way that I could ever get enough of this stuff down myself to make the smallest difference to my health! Instead I would send my stress levels sky-high, and stress is bad for you!

Obviously I don't want to eat processed meat from animals who have suffered an appalling existence in factory farms. I love free-range eggs, and I can make out a big case for cattle and sheep grazing in conservation projects. This is an aspect of meat-eating that never seems to get enough attention. I can eat certain types of fruit and veggies if they taste completely different from the stuff I was force fed on. I don't for one minute imagine that I get the same nutrients from free-range meat and eggs, plus fish, as I would do from the plants I simply cannot eat, however I'm still healthy althougth I'm longer a youngster.

But if I was to turn vegan, what could I live on to put sufficient variety

I am one of those who don't eat meat anymore for the animals (5 years ago), I have respect for them and all the suffering they have to live. I love them since I was a kid too. I never thought about a healthy life as you may notice, but doing a retrospective I was gained 5 Kg before all of this now, after losing that I don't gain nor loss weight it's always the same and I've noticed I have a better mood back then.

It's good to read some of those persons did it for the animals too.

Cody, I guess ressurrecting a very old discussion on veganism is the thing to do this week. For what it's worth, congratulations on the 40-lb. weight loss, and I hope you reach your goal. At 5'11", it's still a bit on the heavy side, but lookin' good there! Now, you should be the first person to realize that what you're eating in the way of garbage, junk is not healthy. I'm wondering if you truly have become "vegan", or just cut out meat? If you eat french fries, you might check what they're fried in, and again, congratulations on trying to improve your health.
