Have you heard the one about the couple who saved a deer and were charged with a crime? It’s a true story.
The Indiana Star reports that a local couple discovered a baby whitetail deer with life-threatening injuries. They took the ailing deer in, tended her wounds, and began feeding her with an eye dropper. As the deer recovered, she graduated to feedings from a bottle, and soon a bond was formed between “Dani” the deer and her good samaritans. The plan was to eventually return Dani to the wild.
The couple has since been charged with illegal possession of a whitetail deer and face 60 days in jail and a $500 fine each. Initially, the couple was warned that the deer would have to be killed due to its extensive contact with people. Before that could happen, Dani managed to find her way back into the wild.
Indiana Governor Mike Pence was briefed on the situation, according to The Wall Street Journal, but it has yet to be resolved.
