Shine On: Glossy Painted Floors

A floor painted in a lovely color is a literal platform for a beautiful space. But a glossy painted floor adds such dimension to a room, we think the concept deserves all the recognition it can get. Here, some of our favorite lustrous colored floors we’ve come across at Remodelista.

Above: In Li Edelkort’s Paris kitchen, the floors are painted in a glossy light gray, accentuating the textures of the dark and rough-hewn furniture elements while reflecting the natural outdoor light.

Above: The ultra glossy marine blue floor in this Scandinavian beach house brings the ocean indoors.

Above: The light-filled apartment of architect James Webb. “To increase the feeling of space, we whitewashed all surfaces, including the floor, which we painted in high-gloss white,” says Webb of his Amsterdam home.

Above: A New England glossy green spatter-painted floor (a favorite look of Remodelista contributing editor Justine) seen via Design Skool.

I love the floors - back home I have seen these floors quite a bit and I have also painted my worn out - not restorable woodfloor of my bedroom here in the U.S. in a glossy very dark grey (almost black) and it looks great - it just wears and has to be redone probably every 2-3 years - since I don't wish to put any clear coat over it.

Not sure what is environmentally friendly about this.

I love how it bounces the light around.

I painted area rugs on My painted floors.Every body Loved how ABSOLUTELY one of a kind my floors were.I was reminded of my green sun room floor by YOUR green picture. On the green field I painted a creamy yellow rug with pink peonys and a scolloped edge (use a saucer --or a cup to draw your scollops with a pencil) When it was about half dry my kitty walked around apparently smelling the peonys. Her yellow paw prints on the green floor were SO CUTE!

Personally, I prefer the comfort of carpet under my feet.....bare boards, however you cut it, are cold and noisy..also, that lovely glossy finish will look like crap in 6 months or less, presuming that ,like everyone else on the planet, you actually LIVE in the room in question.....just let the cats have a mad half-hour on one such floor, have a Labrador using it as a slide( or even toddlers doing much the same), and the damage will be INSTANT.

I love the look, and would love to do something like this on our porches. But, we live in Hawaii, and get almost daily rainfall, so I can only think this looks VERY dangerously slippery!
Is there a product that you can put over this glossy paint, to help preserve it, AND make it non-slip?
