The Dirt on Cleaning Product Companies

How do your favorite mainstream cleaning brands stack up?
Women’s Voices for the Earth, aka WVE, has put out the results of a study of five of the leading cleaning product companies regarding the use and labeling of toxic ingredients in products. I am a big fan of WVE, a national organization that engages women to advocate for the right to live in a healthy environment. They also helped to launch the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics. They “seek to reduce and ultimately eliminate environmental pollutants that cause health problems for women, their families and communities. To this end, WVE creates opportunities for women to influence environmental decision-making.”
Knowing WVE’s mission statement, I sat up and took notice of their announcement about their scorecard on cleaning product companies, published Sept. 24, 2008.
Find out how top manufacturers rate in protecting you from toxic chemicals in The Dirt on Cleaning Product Companies.

add your comment »chlorox owns simple green??? S.C. Johnson does try very hard, their dad meant it when he said from family to family, not company to public.

I have Sjogren's Syndrome which means I'm not producing adequate saliva, among many other things. So, I need to drink & sip on water all the time. I used to refill plastic water bottles until they collapsed. Now I'm happily using steel "canteens/bottles for water that has gone through my PUR filter. Yea.
I have a home health aide and visiting nurse daily. It is like walking up a mountain covered in ice to get them to switch to really green (not products that just use the word "green") cleaning products. Using cloth instead of paper towels wasa huge battle. But, I've got my feet dug in. Obviously, the longer you live green, the easier it is and the increased number of green living things you can do. In general, I think the US (I'm in OH) has to be painted into a corner of a doomsday crisis before change will be made. However, somebody smart came up with the idea of making green be a status symbol. That's fine by me. I have compromised breathing and the change in cleaning supplies has been extremely helpful. 8-)

I read the other article about greenwashing, and the brand Simple Green. I have used Simple Green and other Clorox cleaning products that claim to be "green". This is what I like to refer to as the period before I was 'elightened' :)
Anyway, I wanted to let you guys know there is a great website that is researching, testing, and certifying products independently for consumers. That website is www.GreenCupboards.com.
Have a great day!

My doctor uses simple green all the time in his rooms, every time a patient leaves. Ihave told him I can't be in the rom after they use it bt they say, we water it down...It makes me ill. Now I can tell him it has oxybutenone in it, will it matter??? I thought doctors were supposed to help you get better? ;(

I can not understand how S.C. Johnson & Son could be better than Sunsine Makers / Simple green. I work in a drug store that sells S.C. Johnson & Son products and have always thought that they were really bad for the environment, i have been wanting for a while now to go to community health and buy the Simple Green products and am now having second thoughts. My overall question is which products are better for my family and i, which products are better for the environment, and which products have environmentally safe containers / packaging?

The link is working for me, you may have not waited a long time. Because the link leads to a pdf you might find that it takes longer; it did for me. Sorry for your frustrations, but thanks for your kind comments.--Annie
