The Fire In Your Eyes

Adapted from The Spontaneous Fulfillment of Desire, by Deepak Chopra (Harmony Books, 2003).

If you have fire of soul, then Vedic sages say it is reflected in the shining of your eyes. It’s reflected spontaneously in our body language and body movements. Everything you think, feel, say and do will reflect the same fire.

Do this exercise to connect with the fire in your eyes:

Whenever you look into a mirror, even if it’s just for a second or two, make eye contact with your image and silently repeat the three principles that are the foundation of self-referral. First, say to yourself, “I’m totally independent of the good or bad opinions of others.” Second: “I’m beneath no one.” Third: “I’m fearless in the face of any and all challenges.”

Look into your eyes in the mirror and see those attitudes reflected back to you. Just in your eyes, not in your facial expression. Look for the shine in your eyes to remind yourself of the fire in your soul.

This is the first time I've responded to anything on the internet, but I was so surprised with the experience that I want to say a big THANK YOU DEEPAK. I am still laughing inside, with some kind of joy, I imagine.
Thanks again, Carole Smith 5/03/08

This is a fabulous exercise. Thank you, Mr Chopra.
I haven't seen much fire in my eyes for sometime. I don't even know how I lost it. Guess I've got to search through old photographs to find the point of transition. I believe this would be a great time to bring it back.

You know, our society teaches us from a young age that vanity is a bad thing, that looking at ourselves in mirrors is a bad thing. Most of us, especially women, have flaws that we nitpick, all the while failing to see our own true beauty. I have come to believe that all women have a bit of the old goddesses in them, whether you are fiery and tempestuous or reserved and wise or caring and nurturing. We forget to teach our children to honor themselves for their own unique beauty and talents. True vanity comes when the belief is unfounded, taking some pride in who you are and what you can do yourself is not vanity.

Whether looking AT me or at a photo OF me, people tell me they see so much in my eyes...the stories that come through the windows of my soul, without any words from me. I am always very surprised at what others think they see. I've done the mirror exercise and do see the "fire light" in my hazel eyes with golden flecks. There is something very interesting and mystical in that exercise. Thank you.

Its a nice excersie to boost the self confidence. I do it from many years and it really helps in situations where we get the negative feelings about ourself.

Well I will give it a try, can't hurt, I know that I never seem to like what I see in the mirror, but have never really looked INTO my eyes.........I will try it! Thanks

Fantastic and abolustely! We spend so much time hurrying about and just taking the cursory glances at ourselves to 'check' our apppearance that we forget to *look* at our *self.* It's just as important to make eye contact with the self as it is to do wo with others.

It has been ages since i didnt see myself in mirror in my spare time. it just happens when i m getting ready for work just to make sure everything is fine. Oh never had time to look into my own eyes.
But i will definitely spare time for my spirit. thank you Mr. Chopra.

One of the saddest things I was told recently is that someone that didn't know me commented that I had such sadness in my eyes - it is true that they are the mirror of our souls.
