Top 10 Smartest Dogs

By PetMD

We’ve gathered a wide sample of dog breeds, sharpened their No. 2 pencils (you know, no opposable thumbs), and asked them to fill out a simple intelligence questionnaire. OK, maybe not. But PetMD did come up with a list of the top 10 smartest canine breeds in the world. See if your dog’s breed makes the grade.

10. Australian Cattle Dog

Yes, that Australian Cattle Dog from Down Under. A working dog that is traditionally occupied with controlling and herding cattle, its qualities are exceptional intelligence, alertness, resourcefulness and a fiercely protective loyalty over its property and people. They are agile, strong, active dogs, both physically and mentally, which revel in new experiences. The flip side is that they bore easily and will unintentionally find trouble while looking for activities to occupy themselves with. The Cattle Dog is very organized; many are known for putting their own toys away after playing.

Don't be put off adopting a border collie or bcx. I have 1 purebred and 2 crosses and I'm not a high energy person. All you need is to love spending time with them. A ball thrower (those plastic sticks that hurl the ball a long way) is a wonderful thing. Of course the determination to get them out to play and stimulate thier senses and minds every day is essential. If you don't have the time to do that forget it. They will destroy your house, run away or become neurotic. But then I believe that every dog deserves to get off the property once a day. None of them are mindless.

Here's a link to watch Roo! go:

Btw, Roo! is a husky mix, not a terrier mix, my mistake. Enjoy.

Always fun to read about dog breeds, but just wanted to mention that little terrier mix, Roo!, (exclaimation mark part of his name for his energy :)) won high honors for agility (and smarts) at the Westchester Dog Show this year. His owner adopted him from a shelter, a place where poor little Roo! kept being taken back to because of his high energy. This was the first year the dog show accepted mixed breeds in its agility competition and I was rooting for little Roo! It just goes to show shelter animals just need the right human. Go, Roo!

without a doubt my favourite on this list is the German Shepherd.
We actually had one once - took her in as a stray. She was the most beautifully gentle creature.
All our other dogs have been mixed breeds and we've loved them all.
