When we were kids, napping was a regular part of our daily routine (much to the joy of our parents, I’d imagine). When we’re teenagers, we sleep whenever, and as long as we can.
Health science tells us that there’s a good reason for all this snoozing in our younger years: Children need a lot of good quality of sleep to grow, develop, and function well. Sounds great, right? Which makes me wonder why as adults, we abandon the afternoon nap for energy drinks and copious amounts of coffee?
Research from the National Sleep Foundation has found that too little sleep can lead to weight gain, car accidents, and substance abuse, among other things. And even if you can’t manage to get eight hours every night, taking a nap can help you catch up on much-needed rest throughout the day.
