Two Best Bird Seeds

By the Care2 Staff.

Although spring is clearly on its way, it is still essential to offer food to the wild birds in most areas. Those of us who love to feed the birds often buy large bags of mixed seeds, but many of these contain fillers that may not be attractive to (or all that nutritious for) your local bird population.

Instead, learn which two types of seeds are best and will appeal to the most birds, here:

According to the Virginia Cooperative Extension of Virginia Polytechnic Institute, the two best seeds to buy are black, oil-type sunflower and white prove millet. If you can, buy these seeds in bulk from seed or animal feed suppliers.

For more information on wild bird foods, see Feeding Wild Birds.

Another good seed for finches is black nyger seed. Many species actually prefer it to the larger black oil sunflower. You'll need to buy a special feeder for nyger but it'll be worth it when you see the numbers of finches at your feeders!
