Unconventional Uses: Concrete Blocks as a Bed Base

Unconventional Uses: Concrete Blocks as a Bed Base

From planters to tables, we love the many interesting ways to incorporate affordable concrete blocks into our home decor. Another unique idea: a do-it-yourself bed base, as see in this hip and minimal Los Angeles apartment.

I like this - a lot.

I've done something similar, but instead of the blocks lying on their side, I put them upright and found a couple of hollow-core doors at the ReStore. After screwing the door together (small, flat metal ties) positioned the concrete blocks to evenly support the doors, then covered with a bed skirt I found at a garage sale and the result was 15" high storage space, between the blocks. Some cardboard boxes and I have a wonderful place to store some of my many many books. Really works well in this 121/2' X 141/2 foot room.

I like the look.

When I had my first place I used forklift crates as a base for my futon. I think it pays to recylce.
