Virtual Animal Shelter

Adopt a homeless pet on the Internet using Petfinder.com’s easy search tool.
Petfinder.com is the internet’s largest virtual animal shelter, representing 32,000 animals in more than 1,800 shelters and rescue groups around the country. The site helps facilitate over half a million adoptions a year.
The easy search tool on Petfinder.com can show you within seconds all the pets meeting your specifications in your local area or around the country. All you need to do is specify the kind of animal you are looking for (cat, dog, horse, etc.), the breed (you can put in mix), the age, size, gender, your zip code and the range within which you are willing to look (national or regional).
It is worth taking a trial run on Petfinder.com. The search should bring up at least half a dozen matches in your area, enough to give you a great starting point. The only danger is falling in love with all the pets you see in the pictures, and having a pit in your stomach that you can’t adopt them all.

These are good and worthy organizations; however, let's not forget the rescue societies. The Greyhound Rescue Society is just one of these, trying to place these beautiful & gentle-natured dogs in homes after their short racing careers are thru. Most are euthanized. Check out the many resuce orgs for various breeds.

I agree with the free spay/neuter program. The vets in all areas could afford to volunteer to do it once a month- instead of killing so many animals in the shelter. It's such a shame and a waste of life. Our shelter has coupons for reduced spay/neuter, but does not advertise them, unless someone asks, only no one asks, because they don't know they are there- so they go unused- stupid right- animals go unspayed/unneutered and babies end up at the shelter and END UP DEAD- I get so frustrated. Glad I am leaving this county.

Every freecycle that I have been on (4) have allowed the offering of pets but not the looking for. We are told to check out those who respond to offers, by checking with vets-small children, etc- I realize that Petfinder has a great many pets available and I have been looking there for my next pet. I think it's a great source of finding a new pet.

In response to the comment about Freecycle - offering or requesting animals is not permitted. This has been confirmed by Freecycle moderators.

Check with "Freecycle.org". It costs nothing to join, just a yahoo account. People are always giving away animals on that site.

I don't guess I understand...the dogs/cats at the shelters where I live are spayed/neutered, usually have shots started and some have been tested for FIV/FLV and sometimes heartworm. Some of them have been microchipped. If you cannot afford what the shelter is asking you cannot afford the animal. A large part of the problem is all the free kittens/puppies that go to supposed good homes, become pregnant and end up getting kicked to the curb. Or some Einstein decides theirs does not need to be neutered because it will diminish his manliness or alter his personality (yes, he will be healthier and sweeter usually).
The shelter animals are more than a good deal and they need a good home but they do not need to end up back in the shelter again.

I love petfinder, I found my sheltie mix on it! :) He's great and I love him to death. I of course first met him before I decided to adopt him. Like cars, you want to try it out before you buy it. But he was as perfect as can be and I am happy with him.
I refer all my family and friends to it!

Hi I agree with both sides in regard to adopting a stray from Petfinder. One you have to take into account that the animals in shelters are spayed and neutered and have received all their vaccinations and sometimes microchiped. If you were to do this on your own, the price would be three times that you are paying from Petfinder. Besides If you can't afford to adopt an animal you shouldn't have one. I also, believe that there should be more Low Cost spay and neuter clinics available, but these are hard to find because you have to have the ok from your county officials as well as Veternarians that will preform the surgeries for a low cost or volunteering their services. Please, I do encourage people to take the time to check out Petfinder and do price comparisons for the overall cost of the animals needs. They can't speak for themselves, We have to stand up and speak for them. Thank you.
