In China, the culinary tradition of eating cats and dogs may come to an end as the pet-loving urban middle class finds the practice increasingly distasteful. A recommendation to ban the practice of dog and cat consumption will be submitted in April as part a draft bill to tackle animal abuse. Online petitions have garnered thousands of signatures and videos of maltreatment, spurring protests in Chinese markets where animals are bought and sold.
Considered medicinal in ancient times, dog meat is still widely available throughout the country. The planned ban is causing heated debate between defenders of traditional values and animal welfare groups.

Old but time to revisit, I suppose. The practice is horrific to us but if you eat meat you have an obligation to advocate humane treatment but not a ban on consumption.
Right is right and wrong is wrong. Being two-faced and consuming a cow or lamb but not a cat or dog isn't going to play. BTW, I would never eat a cat or dog because it's horrifying to me but, having worked on a ranch, I know that a cow can get to love you ............ so that makes me a two-face hypocrit, too.

the problem is that in China, animals are not protected by law
That is a MAJOR victory for cats and dogs if this comes to fruition, and I am so praying that it does. It's not going to be easy to undo thousands of years of tradition like that, but trust me, with people coming to finally discover the joy of having cats and dogs as pets over there,
I think they, as in the Chinese themselves, are realizing that this treatment is going on and calling for an end to it. The way these poor cats and dogs are treated is an outrage. I simply cannot fathom how anyone would advocate FOR this consumption, and for the fur trading that goes on, am quite glad that horrible practice is being brought to light too BTW, and being called for to be put to an end.
One can only pray that these voices continue to be heard, and that the end of consumption of dog and cat meat in China and other Asian countries is at hand. That, my friends, would be a GOOD thing!

Cats/Dogs/Cows/Sheep....They are all creatures with feelings and personalities and none should be eaten as it is just plainly SICK!!!!!!
Dolphins save people too and Japan kills 23,000 a year. Sea Shepherd is on the ground filming right now. One was arrested and set free. This must stop also.
I think we must stop killing all animals now as each has a purpose.
