We live our lives each day, dreaming, planning, and making choices about the future with a clear idea about the direction our lives are headed.
As an accomplished equestrian, I had dreams of a European tour and world titles after finishing school. I had a boyfriend and a full social calendar with many friends.
November 17th 1992 started like any other day: school, errands, plans for the weekend.
What I wasn’t aware of was that it would be the last day of my old life.
While driving home to change clothes, I skidded on black ice and collided with a tractor-trailer coming in the opposite direction. Although I was in a coma for a month and suffered a devastating brain injury that left me paralyzed and unable to walk, talk, or use my right arm, it was a miracle I wasn’t killed outright.
I have, in the last 15 years, watched every part of my life prior to the accident (my boyfriend, career, and friends) just dissolve and disappear, and in the process of that, seen myself completely re-invented. Not just physically, but emotionally and spiritually. Last day of your "old life" ... how about last day of your life. Tomorrow doesn't come with a guarantee.
Live in the NOW for yesterday is gone and tomorrow's far away ... and you should be the best you can by living in today.
Most tragedy is an opportunity for growth, necessary life-lessons if alooked at a wake-up gifts and not defeats. Your choice.
