Women: What Do You Wish You Had More Time For?

  • 3 of 12

The most beautiful discovery true friends make is that they can grow separately without growing apart. - Elisabeth Foley

I wish I had more time for friends. Friendship is a magical thing, when we engage in it and I have to admit, this one left my heart aching a bit. I realized last fall that over the last couple of years, I sucked at some of the friendships that mean a great deal to me. Ironically, it’s not only that I haven’t been there for them (which, in fact, I hadn’t been and that sucks) but that I also haven’t been the me that I am when I’m being a good friend.  As a life coach, I spend lots of time connecting with incredible women but it’s almost always about work. I missed playing with my friends and while I’m still not the rock star friend I intend to be, I’m showing up more and more and it feels good.

Give yourself the same gift. Once a month, have Indian food with a group of carefully chosen women who make you laugh so hard you cry (I learned that from my friends Laura and Susannah.) Email a friend who lives far away just to tell them about how something made you think of them today (like my friend Allison does). Make beautiful treasures and send them for no good reason (or for a good reason, if you have one) like my friend Suzanne’s rainbow makers. You could send a cd like my friend Jaime does, when you know that a friend needs a pick me up. (Try anything by Florence + The Machine but specifically “Dog Days Are Over”, which I once listened to again and again until a serious spell of desperation passed.) Or you could just pick up the phone and call, even if you don’t have the hour or two it will take to truly catch up (like I will be doing this week with my friend Dave). Or you can just marry them, which is what I did with my best friend.

There are so many options. Do anything you have within your means to reconnect with your community.

I love this post, partly because it made me feel good about all the little things I DO managed to do for myself instead of just thinking I'm not doing enough.

Christy, I always enjoy your articals, but there is one thing I feel I must point out. Our bodies are NOT machines! Or temples. They are animals, human mammals that our 'spirits' live in for their earthly visit.Perhaps this old belief of 'body as a machine' is at the root of a lot of self disreguard that incourages us to let others determine our use of attention. We don't assume the bodies of our pets or work animals, or food animals are machines, so why do we think our own bodies can be treated like equipment that can be pushed to the max every day? I'm a massage therapist and there are some clients whoes personality just annoy the hell out of me, but I can always emphathize with their bodies. It's like a neglected horse with a stupid rider who has no sense of the emotional nature, or physical needs of their own loyal steed. Acknowledge your body as a creature who loves you and you will not confuse your spiritual nature with your bodys nature. It's the one that wants to move and dance, sleep more, drink more water, make music and get the mind to shut up long enough to just be so the energy that feeds all can flow thru unobstructed.

Thanks for the lovely post. It's interesting to see what people said. I would like time to pick up music again and learn how to use my second-hand table loom, but soon I will be making time to travel and learn some other things, so for now those things can wait.

I've got all the time I need. I spend it with my Life Review in mind.

Thank you, great read! I'm homeschooled so I do lots of these things in my free time, after school work. Everyone can always make a little time for something. I enjoy art, guitar, sleep, reading, and pretty much everything on this list :)

Having enough time is age related. Never enough when children are smaller. Just do the best one can. Time management can be applied with success to all other life circumstances.
