The Answers

1. A cat has how many olifactory cells in their nose?

d. 200 million

This is 14 times as many olifractory cells in a human nose! Can you thus imagine how differently they “read” their surrounding environment than we do. Thus, if you ever wondered why your cat gives you the cold shoulder after applying perfume, now you know. †That is, unless your preferred scent is Eau de Poisson.

2. A catís nose pad is ridged, and like human fingertips each cat nose has a unique print. True or False?

True.

So, cat burglars beware you could be convicted on your nose print alone.

3. Cats have a second organ for smelling located behind their front teeth. True or false?

True.

This was news to me until yesterday when I researched and wrote this quiz, but it is true that cats have a second organ to detect and process smell Ė and it is called the Jacobson organ. The organ consists of two apertures behind the front teeth in the roof of your catís mouth. Have you ever seen your cat make a funny grimace for no apparent reason? This is called the Flehman response and it is your cat utilizing his Jacobson organ. Who knew!? Tom cats are frequently seen with this expression when on the hunt for hottie females.

4. Catnip is exciting to some cats because it smells similar to a queen (adult female) in heat. True or False?

True.

Catnip contains a chemical, transnepetalactone, that is very similar to the substance secreted by a†female cat in oeterous (in heat). †Combine this fact with the fact that catnip is also closely related to marijuana and you can see why some cats bliss-out when given this kitty treat! MEOW-ZA!

5. Most catsí eyes will shine a silvery green in the darn when a light shines on them, except for the Siamese whose eyes shine red. True or False?

True.

Cat’s have a reflective layer behind their retina called the tapetum lucidum, which bounces light back. Why Siamese cats, in particular, get “red demon eyes” at night is an interesting question. Anyone have the answer?

cats are incredible critters. My cat is second only to my child (and a very close second at that) She is quite stunning, with her jet black fur, her white mittens and long white whiskers. The best cat on Earth :)

I've rescued cats for over 25 years, and was unaware of most of the facts in this column. Thanks, the answers to a lot of my questions were found her for the first time for me, today.
