Zoos: Sanctuaries or Prisons? (Illustration)

Are zoos good or bad? It’s an eternally tricky question: while they can be invaluable in saving endangered species and educating the public, they do so at the expense of keeping wild animals locked away in captivity for their whole lives.

But for one child who visited an especially grim zoo, the issue was clear-cut. After the zoo visit, s/he wrote a passionate note expressing how s/he felt about the conditions of the animals:

“Your zoo is a jail.
The cages are to small.
Tigger was crying.
I hate the visit.”

See the child’s budding activism below:

I do agree that animals in zoo are just so sad and crying as they have lose there freedom and force to live in a limited space.

Agree with Winnie.

Not all zoos are bad, yet I much prefer seeing animals in sanctuaries where they have room to roam and indulge in natural behaviour.
Cages are not natural, for ANY living creature.

It upsets me to see animals caged in zoos. I'd much rather see them in the wild, where they belong. There might be some good zoos but there are far more bad ones that give them all a bad name. I would have to say that I think of zoos as prisons.

I can see both sides of this argument, but some zoos are an absolute disgrace.
Wild animal parks or reserves where they can roam free over large territories is best, though unfortunately poachers manage to get in because it's difficult to cover all the ground at the same time. I do believe it's the best option for the animals though.
