ASPCA RESPONDS TO NYC PETS AFFECTED BY DISASTER

ANIMAL RESCUE COMMAND CENTER ASSISTS OWNERS TO RECOVER STRANDED PETS ASPCA CRISIS HOTLINE AND ANIMAL DISASTER RELIEF FUND SET UP

(New York, NY) September 13, 2001 - The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) has set up a command center and pet rescue hotline in response to the plight of pets affected by the World Trade Center disaster. "These steps are in direct response to the hundreds of phone calls we have received from pet owners distraught and worried about their companion animals," said ASPCA President and CEO Dr. Larry Hawk.

The ASPCA command center is located at the corner of Houston Street and West Street at Pier 40. It is equipped with a mobile veterinary medical unit, emergency medical supplies, pet carriers, pet food, and a psychologist trained to help distressed pet owners. The purpose of the command center is to assist pet owners with stranded pets and provide medical care to animals. The ASPCA Humane Law Enforcement Division has coordinated their effort with the New York City Parks Department to gain access to buildings during daylight hours.

The ASPCA has also set up a hotline (212-876-7700 ext. 4PET) for pet owners to call and report pets that are stranded in homes. The hotline is staffed by counselors who are providing guidance and support to distressed owners. In addition, The ASPCA is compiling a database of information pertaining to the location of stranded pets. The database will be used to contact owners once The ASPCA receives clearance to enter the area where their pets are located.

The following is additional information from the ASPCA:

-- Although far from ideal, pets (dogs and cats) can survive for several days, perhaps even longer, without food and water. Once you are reunited with your animal after a period of several days, please take him to your veterinarian. The animal may need fluids and other medical attention.

-- If you know of a pet in your building that is alone and your building has not been evacuated, The ASPCA urges you to get involved and help. Attempt to gain entry to your neighbor's apartment and provide food, water and exercise.

-- The ASPCA is prepared to help animals with medical conditions that are a result of this terrible tragedy in the New York City area. The ASPCA also offers medical services at Bergh Memorial Hospital from 7:00AM to 7:00PM Monday through Friday and from 8:30 AM to 3:00 PM on Saturdays.

-- In addition, The ASPCA has set up a fund to assist with rescue relief efforts. Those interested in making a donation can call (212)-876-7700 x4516. You may also send a check payable to The ASPCA Animal Disaster Relief Fund at 424 E. 92nd Street, New York, NY 10128.
