Polar bears are dying. As global warming accelerates, the sea ice they depend on for survival is literally melting away. Bears are starving and drowning as they have to swim farther and farther to reach solid ice. Some are even turning to cannibalism.

Polar-bear cubs born at Nuremberg's zoo have vanished and are presumed dead. The missing cubs, probably two of them, may have been eaten by their mother, Vilma. The zoo's director allowed them to die because their mother rejected them.
