Native bees offer an alternative to wild honeybees and cultured honeybees because they are resistant to both the varroa and tracheal mites. And because they do not live in hives, native bees are not at risk of being overcome by Africanized bees.

For 4 weeks a year, cycads go through a pollination period. During this time, male cones use energy stored within them to raise their temperature as much as 12 C. As the odor increases, insect thrips leave and carry the pollen from male to female cones.
