In October, Hyrum Long and his daughter, Susan Johnson, were arrested after police found a dog buried alive in their backyard. The dog, Molly, who belonged to Johnson, had been bashed over the head with a hammer by Long in an attempt to kill the dog.

I DON'T THINK EITHER ONE OF THEM SHOULD EVER GET OUT OF JAIL. WHO WILL THEY HIT IN THE HEAD WITH A HAMMER NEXT. MAYBE HIS WIFE SINCE SHE IS ILL.

Lock them both up and throw away the keys. They don't deserve to ever be free.

I cannot begin to comprehend how anyone could do such a thing. I also deplore the reduction of charges.

I don't get it...why reduce the charges? This is proof that no matter your age, people still listen to the evil doer. (T.E.D.)

it is terrible, they should have made sure she was completley dead before they buried her.

The poor dog. It doesn't bear thinking about her being still alive when they buried her. I hope there are a lot of people in jail that love animals and will make their lives unbearable. R.I.P.Sweetheart. Noted thanks Cher.

Did anyone read the comment of his lawyer who pleaded for community sentence and not jail time as the man's wife is ill? I would not leave this man alone with anyone that is ill. The dog was starving, had a skin disease (for more than a year) etc. and his answer was to knock it over the head with a hammer and bury it allive - because that is the way his parents' society dealt with problems like this! Obviously never heard of animal shelter free clinics. I think his ill wife is safer away from the likes of him....

His daughter was an accomplice - just goes to show that respect for animals or the opposite thereof is taught by our parents. He is banned from owning or controlling any animal for the rest of his life, his daughter's ban is only five years. Who is going to educate her, so that she does not become a repeat offender in five years' time?

And why not combine the jail time with having to work at an animal shelter -He must not be allowed to go near the animals, but I'm sure there are plenty of other things that could keep him and his daughter busy, like washing out septic pussy blankets etc... When I was a nurse - that is one job that could make anyone puke - removing soiled linen....

it will be intesting indeed if the poor wife goes missing and a mysterious "bump" appears in the garden. do you ever wonder if a dog senses the persona of the person who chooses it and knows what its fate will be?

An eye for an eye justice is starting to sound like a very good idea right now.

I believe they sense the persona of the person, but would not be aware of what their fate would be. Watch dogs walk rings around some people or simply 'go' for them, while this same 'vicious' dog swamps another person with hugs and kisses....

Ditto Kate and Lisa! An eye for an eye makes the whole world blind, but I agree it does sound like a good idea right now....

Rocky, in case you have missed any of the social studies done and the resultant statistics thereof:

Most criminals (those who abuse human beings) have also abused animals in their youth or just prior to becoming an abuser of humans. If we want to stop the abuse against humans we have to go back to grass root values - and that is respect for all forms of life, and this starts with the animal kingdom. Even in South Africa, where crime is endemic it has been proven that the animal care education classes run at township schools is having a beneficial impact on reducing junvenile crime!

As for your concern about people who only talk about their pets and not their kids - how much television do these families watch? How much do they interact on a personal level? Sadly this has NOTHING to do with them yacking all the time about their animals. It is a complete breakdown of the close knit family that used to support one another, eat together, pray together and play together.

So I would suggest you concentrate your efforts on social work to re-instill old fashioned family values and get togethers - and take your animal bashing attitude to a thread where such an attitude is welcome. It certainly is not welcome here.
