It has since been used to study pine regeneration and other matters relating to timber production. Bear, moose, fisher, and bobcat all stalk this wilderness.

Yes, that's great that this approx. 80 yr. old managed forest (regenerated) is home to these various species.
A little sad of course though that he says it has the largest and oldest trees in that part of Maine. Because 80 yrs. old isn't very old for any tree. It just makes one aware of how many old growth forests have been annihilated in North America. So it's better than nothing of course. Hopefully it makes one want to protect every sq. ft. of remaining old growth forests there are.

Much of northern Maine is private timberland, slashed with logging roads and skid trails, just as most of the Pacific NW.

Unfortunately, a lot of the belief in American forest is held only by the nearsighted, and those who cannot recognize the actual ages of the trees. The redwoods here for instance, are tiny things in comparison to the stumps throughout the forests.

More logging was done since WWII than before, as chainsaws and the monster logging trucks came into use. Back east, as in New England, old farms from previous centuries went back to forest, but the population explosion is reapingit all, from Maine to Minnesota to Florida.

If you are one who studies wildlife, ecosystems, forests, and lives most within, or visits them , it is all a continuous and deepening tragedy.

They are doing the same thing in Arizona Wayne. They are building farther and farther out in the desert where the animals live and then complain because they come to their houses when they should never have been there to begin with. One of these the animals is gonna take it all back if they don`t wipe all of them out first.
