In 2007, Ebrard launched an ambitious 15-year eco-action policy called "Plan Verde" (Green Plan) to address many of the city's woes. Taking lessons from Bogota, Columbia, Plan Verde is addressing city transit issues, in part, with bikes. The capital's

I agree with Tierney and Gayla. It is a great idea and everybody would do this BUT, in some cities (including mine) implementing bikes would represent a risk for bikers cause people just do not feel any respect for them at all. I have seen drivers to just ignore bikers so it can be scaring for them to get into the traffic just like that! Anyway, we need to start some day if we really wish to stop the pollution.

Where I live they have a bicycle path between the road and the sidewalk........ it works wonderfully!!!!!!

A lot of people use it and it goes right across the city!

Peddled my butt around this city for decades!

lol

Tere, I believe that Mexico City is around 20 years ahead of Monterrey. We do not have anything prepared for bikers. There is just the sidewalk and the street. My husband has told me that he wants to buy a motorcycle to go to work and I told him "¿do you want to die this young?" :-(

I'm the author of the Mexico City bike post. I have been to Mexico City a few times, but haven't tried bicycling yet. Next time I'm visit! I'm especially curious to try the rental bike program. Anybody who lives there, can they comment on those? Especially those closed streets on sundays. I'm going to do some follow up posts on Green Options soon about different aspects of the mayor's Green Verde plan. twitter: @travelero
