The Arctic National Wildlife Refuge has been called America's Serengeti -- one of the most important onshore denning habitats for America's struggling polar bears and home to caribou, Arctic foxes and millions of migratory birds.

Heres the deal :
All NEW drilling, new shale projects, more mountain top removal, etc. WILL NOT BE ALLOWED. There must be a new world economy that takes the earth and its people and animals and vegetation into account. The 'main" cause of this recession is not economic its environmental, this MUST be understood. Emissions and pollution are down worldwide thanks to this "recession", if the world cannot come to an accord in sustainability, then it should be common sense to US ALL by now that OUR Global economy will fall, only hard this time. That all i have to say about that. :):):) Thx Cher.
Thank god we have a guy that makes sense in office, all considered, or the world would have already been destroyed.
It would be wise FOR ALL to buckle up , we will have the change WE DESIRE, period. I see the light already...... NOTHING can stop the New era( age), I AM excited, but impatient(a little bored too, lol).

Where do I start? We use coal for electricity, solar heat can make a big reduction in our electric bill. But the Arctic has oil, not coal.

Petroleum is used for transportation - what are the alternatives? An electric bicycle costs around seven hundred dollars. It will go 20mph for 20 miles, the legal limit in most municipalities. This is powered by a 300 to 350 watt motor - one half horsepower.

A solar cell could provide electricity while the bike is in use - you can charge the batteries as you ride along.

The real problem with petroleum will be aircraft, ships and trucks. People fly, and it will be sometime before electric planes. Every time you fly you are using petroleum.
How are going to move cargo in the oceans without oil?

There is a solution to trucks - rail, (everything except produce which must be shipped quickly). Electric trains are very efficient.

We have only been dependent on petroleum for about a hundred years - originally, engines ran on fuel derived from plant oil.

What else can we do? There are still liberals who eat meat - it takes forty times the fossil fuel to produce a pound of protein from feedlot beef as from soybeans. So much for protesting the Iraq war or saving the Arctic!
