I don't even like the rhinos! However, they deserve far better than to be killed for the profit of their horn! These people are really despicable! Since public humiliations of criminals is no longer allowed, and I speak of the long forgotten "stock", perhaps in addition to the maximum criminal sentence, the courts could take every dime from these people since whatever they have, they "earned" from their poaching activities, unless they could prove a very different source. The fact that there are veterinarians among these defendants really speaks to our state of the society. If even the vet (who by training and oath, is expected to take care of animals has chosen to profit by their "special" knowledge, training, and education) is swayed by greed to kill these animals, what does that really say about our society? If these vets serve less than a life sentence for their despicable behavior, then we have truly lost justice in this world. These "animal physicians" have earned the right to die in jail for their greedy crimes! No sympathy here, except for the animals!

Noted - for the sake of this planet and its innocent species incarcernate them for life. Nothing but low-life profit-seeking murderers. Thanks Cher for the post.

In June 2009 there was news on hunter Teresa Groenwald-Hagerman, "I Couldn't Wait to Get My Elephant." Any relation to member of this group? Crimes like this cannot be tolerated. If those in power won't act in sentencing perpetrators to serious jail time, there will be vigilante justice. People all over the world care about animals and are outraged by the despicable atrocities inflicted upon innocent creatures, no matter the species.

They are despicable- but so are the people who buy the rhino horns- and no one seems to arrest them. or even write about them. No market, no poachers.

Thank you for the article. I am glad they FINALLY caught so many. 2 vets? and a farmer? how rude. And a couple of women? Dang. Yeah, they should all be sent to the middle of rhino country with no weapons at all. Good luck to them. The trade in rhino horns for meds and aphrodediacs needs to be shut down then this will stop. Culture may be culture (ad nauseaum) but wrong is wrong.

Heavily fine them and put them in jail for 20 years, then they would be so old and broke they wouldn't try to do it again!

Incarceration for 25 years with no opportunity for parole. (I can't imagine that they have been out on bail. There should have been no bail for them. And, that 2 of these people are veterinarians exhibits "greed" over animal welfare. Along with incarceration, of course, these 2 vets must lose their licenses. All those found guilty must also be assessed high fines to be used to protect and help abused animals.

How AGGRESSIVE are most of the contents!! I cannot believe that you believe still in Punishment.
Punishment is not the answer .. because they have done it already ... and the animals are already dead.

The buyer of these horns are the culprits ... and these people who want more sexual satisfaction.

We can never eliminate totally crimes ......... since this planet has humans, there was crime.

But we can create step by step an environment, where there is less and less crime because people feel equal, have enough money, have a dissent living situation, are able to communicate with their fellowmen etc.

The first step is to give up all aggressions in yourself and to work for a BETTER LIFE for people and all other creations. Peace starts by everyone first!!

I am furious that 2 veterinarians were involved, and strangely appreciative that a hunters' association voiced their opposition to poaching.

Poachers operate in rings and it is wonderful that they have caught a major poaching ring. I hope that they are prosecuted and never participate in poaching again.

These scum should be so ashamed of themselves, especially the vets ,and women ,and for what'Money 'of course, they didn't care that they are helping to wipe out a species that is vunerable and under threat of extinction, also keeping alive the ridiculous myth of the rhino horn having some mystical power to increase the sex drive of the under developed impotent men mainly from the asian countries, who by demand for their magical potions keep this disgusting massacre of the rhino's ongoing,I hope an example is made of these 'HUMANS'?please confisticate all their worldly goods and give the money to help and protect the 'Rhino's'.

Can you actually imagine VETS being involved!??!What on earth good is the amount that they had to pay? It would most likely mean NOTHING to them! I just can't get over how anyone could deal in this disgusting trade! I thought it would be just hungry African people who needed food and were tempted to do this and might have just a vestige of an excuese.. but fat Afrikaaner s!! DISGUSTING!! .. Still, I suppose at least they are catching people and making it public, which is a good thing.

Friday September 24, 2010, 2:15 am
Colin H.... I am SO sorry!... When I used the world Afrikaaner in that manner, I didn't mean any offence to Afrikaaners per se! I suddenly notice you said that it was "YOUR country and the last thing I wanted was to say anything to insult you I was just mad at these people!!.. Most of my loveliest friends are fat and many have been Afrikaaners and so you KNOW I meant no insult!

It is good that they have been caught and the 2 vets should have their Licences taken away and not be allowed to practise in any other country ,ever again,

I thought this is a constructive discussion side from peaceful people.

But most comments are still from people who are sitting on their high moral horse and are just wanting that these criminals are killed or tortured .... and for sure are thinking that they are better! ... and the comments are mainly from woman. I am sitting here and I can't believe it. We are not in the Wild West anymore!!!

I am not a passivist. If I was around to witness the Holocaust, I would definately demand punishment for those involved. Many SS and high ranking Nazis high tailed it to South America and never were caught. Lower ranking Nazis slunk down and blended into the general population until some were flushed out by Jewish Nazis hunters. I doubt if Nazis collective conscience ever kept one of them awake at night. Verbal angry remarks are letting off steam, because we sitting at our computers feel helpless and frustrated at the deeds being discussed. I refuse to be of the silent majority when something evil is done to animal, child or adult. In public we would be sued for libel, defamation of character, and God knows what..but here, we have freedom of speech and expression. Long live the internet!

Nina L (17)

to Gloria, what about using your "steam" to recognize your aggressions and to forgive these people who have done wrong. When you are connecting with your inner peace, you will see a different world.
Your "steam" does not help yourself and others. And I think we should discuss about ways HOW we can prevent crime, how we deal with these people and how we can help children to grow into another world.

You don't have to be silent and it is important to bring evil to the light. But then when we call for torture and murder for the evil, we become evil as well. EVIL CANNOT BE OVERCOME BY EVIL!!!!
Evil has to be exposed and given as much light as possible ... and there are many ways to do this.

I've said it before...the only way to make sure these people absolutely will not do this again is to impose the death penalty. They knew what they were doing. I have no pity for them, no matter what happens to them. Rot in hell.
