Today, 193 countries have signed the U.N Convention on Biological Diversity. The U.S. is not one of them. In fact, the U.S. is only one of two countries--the other is Andorra--to have failed to ratify the CBD.

Signing on to this commitment is the least we can do. In fact, the climate change we are measuring is much more serious than most of us realize. It is time for us to stop ratifying the minimum and to proceed instead to more radical and committed action

It would appear that US businesses don't want the US to sign this binding agreement. Too bad, they do NOT own our government, no matter how much they have paid to buy it. I never sold my share! The politicians need to support it to get it signed and if they don't, VOTE THEM OUT OF OFFICE. We are the people and we have the power to vote them in or out of office or even impeach them if necessary. We have the power, and it's far past time that we use it. Why should we let a few rich individuals use their companies to destroy our world?

why would we sign on to protect biodiversity?

USDA kills over 1M animals/yr (mixed species) on behalf of the cattle/sheep industry, we hunt wolves, foxes, caribou, bears (polar, grissly, black etc), pigeons, deer, prairie dog, etc etc etc etc using helicopters, traps, exotic poisons.
' We got an industry to support ' which is far more important than biodiversity

The US didn't sign on to ban land mines, or to the Law of the Sea, or to the human rights law etc. Why would I be surprised that they want an escape clause & don't want to sign up for bio-diversity -

God forbid we cut our consumption !!

Biodiversity is the life blood of our planet, just as our bodies need nutrients from all the diverse foods available to us, the planet requires the full diversity of plant, mineral, animal and insect life to maintain it's health. lt could probably do without the human component! We just seem to keep interfering and thinking we can do it better, quicker and with less work. When will we learn? Nature has all the answers we are just not listening!

Why are we bent on being the international "Bad Guy"?

It is terrible for our image in the world. It's an affront to real scientists everywhere. It is, quite simply, suicidal to refuse to insist on valuing dollars over any real future for hummanity.
