Twenty three panther deaths were recorded by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) last year. Of those, 16 were killed by cars, while six deaths were attributed to "intraspecific aggression", or panthers killing other panthers.

So sad for the poor panthers. I hope that the new wildlife underpass will help prevent more tragic and senseless deaths.

Very sad. Beautiful animals killed by cars driven by humans on roads that are the panthers lands. Heartbreaking.

I do not think that speed is the main cause for vehicles striking the panthers.Rather it is the joy of killing that some people have.I drive 50 miles round trip every day to work and I see many animals smashed OFF the road. These aren't animals that crawled a distance after being hit, these are animals to the side of the road and the driver had to drive to the side of the road to hit them.It makes me so angry and upset when I see this. How can anyone find pleasure in driving their vehicle over an animal and smashing the life right out of them.Often I will say a little prayer to ask GOD to punish that person somehow and I hope HE does.I wish they would just run off the road next time they try to kill something ,and just hit a tree .They would deserve that

AGREE WITH PEGGY I HAVE ALSO SEEN A WHOLE FAMILY OF RACCOONS RUN OVER, SHAMEFUL THERE ARE PEOPLE OUT THERE THAT WOULD RUN THEM ALL OVER JUST TO KILL THEM!

Noted!!! I still think that all cars should be made with a device that sends out a sound that warns wildlife way ahead of time that something's coming!!! Even if they're trying to hit the animals on purpose, the car would at least send out a noise that would at least give the animals a chance!! Thanks Cher!!

How sad! I like the warning sound idea. Here's an odd and unpopular one: Quit encroaching on their territory. Yeah, like I said, unpopular.

Unfortunately this happens everywhere not only to panthers but to many other species of wildlife. We need to reduce our speed and be very vigilent when driving on country roads.

That sucks...The Panthers are so important to S. Florida. I hope that more is done to try and help them..They are so beautiful and I shudder to think that if a momma panther gets hit and killed and then all her babies die...
=(

This is the results of human encroachment on animal habitats. There ins way to stop this. I pray people stop multiplying before we take up the whole Earth and kill all the animals.

I agree with Peggy and James. I live on a state route and people run over animals on purpose in front of my house on a near-daily basis. Like Peggy, I pray that something befalls them in this life, and I know Hell awaits them in the next!

There are so few left. Is there no way that some of the area could be fenced off to protect them?

Maximum fines to the drivers if they leave the scene and not report it!

Does Florida have any designs for a panther sanctuary? It's clear the panther is loosing its struggle against man.
For anyone who has accidentally killed a large animal(dog, deer), it's a terrible experience. I do feel for the driver who accidentally kills an animal: the experience is really terrible.

WE in Nova Scotia Canada can buy a deivce for our cars that warns us of an animal on our roads ahead. This saves lives of humans and animals. And we have highways built under our highways for animal roads that the animals can pass to the other side without them or us being injured.. As we know if we hit a deer or moose both can die.
these animal l highways cost millions we pay for via our taxes but it is all so worth it. It brraks my hreat to see a dead animal along the roads. I hope Florida will take a look at our under highway animal highways. we all dserve to live

Thats so heartbreaking and this has to stop. Can't we find a harmonious way to live with this way without them dying?

Florida!
You are loosing control over your protection to animals.Aren't you interested? Too many wrong doings to them permited in that state. See your shelters!! - DEATH ROWS TO ANIMALS!! - You are still a killing state! And no appropriate measures to protect wild animals.KILLING ON ROADS ARE NOT A CONTROL MEASURE!!!!!!!!! - IT"S CRUELTY!!!!!!!!!!!
A LOT OF CRUELTY IN FLORIDA!!!!!!!!!!!!

pretty god damn sad. i wonder if a lot of these motorists just dont care. wouldnt surprise me one bit. such a beautiful cat. they need one of those special sound horns that alert animals when a car is approaching. they are used here in canada for deers but maybe they work on all animals. worth a try.

All wild animals are fighting a losing battle when it comes to humans, where is our humanity ? Too busy wrapped up in our own little lives to care about the animals around us, it seems. These big cats were here long before people, but I fear as long as the huge population is there they stand a fairly slim chance, though they are trying to hold their own. I have hope, but not in humanity, sorry to say.

People purposefully try to hit animals because they can get away with it. I think most of them only avoid hitting people because they'd rot in jail for it.....but they are twisted enough that if they thought they could get away with it, wouldn't slow down for anything or anyone.
