The New York State legislature is about to pass a law lowering the bow hunting age to twelve! Yes, unbelievably, twelve! As if we don't have enough hunting accidents already. As if we don't already have enough animals wounded from bad shots,

oh, this is great.....teeny boppers with weapons that can maim, kill, torture, and this is what we teach our children? Ah what crap.
My granddaughter is 12, she plays with dolls yet, and if someone her age had a bow and arrow and actually killed an animal she would have nightmares for years and years.
This is just plain stupidity on the part of the 'good ol' boys' again.....the "my son, the killer, just like his old man" wow......and then these children turn their new found puffed up macho-ness on their friends? Or do they progress to guns at 14, then assault weapons at 18, and then....voila....we have new fodder for the military...and can send them out to kill humans....because, after all, they won't have any compassion about the animal or human they killed having caused death to a defenseless sweet animal who harmed no the tender age of 12! Madness beyond belief!

Here's hoping that if this piece of crap passes, more kids will become the victims of their dads' and politicians stupidity. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that hunting accidents increase under this assinine legislation. Maybe if enough kids are injured/killed the legislators will realize their mindlessness.

twelve year old kids should be playing stickball, soccer or video game, not scrambling around in the woods shooting - or more likely TRYING and failing - animals. As a New Yorker I could and did sign, and note this. I am not against hunting for meat - just against trophy hunting, but 12 is just too darn young!

What?! Who would want their child to go bow hunting at 12 years old? It's crazy and very dangerous to pass legislation like this. I'd sign the petition if I could, but I don't live in New York.

12? Why not 6? Then simply give them one when they enter Kindergarten. Make Bow-Hunting part of the curriculum for the children. I guess that may interfere with the metal detectors.
About those metal detectors... obviously, there is a problem with school safety and students carrying weapons.
Good luck with that, New York. I'm not a citizen, so I can't sign the petition.

It won't let me sign, because it's for New York residents, only. The whole idea is an abomination. There is no reason on Earth why little kids should be shooting at beautiful living things with bows and arrows! Why don't their parents take them out into nature and teach them about the BEAUTY of wildlife, instead of taking them out there to maim, inflict massive fear and pain on, and kill it?

Thanks for the info Cher - used it (even tho I am from South Africa) and it WORKED! I noticed on most petitions that if I chose just any old state and added a 0 in front of my own postal code it was also accepted! The more signatures the better I say - it should NOT be restricted to only that area, as so many animal lovers and activists in other parts of the world feel very strongly about these atrocities being committed on a daily basis! Fraud committed for a good cause I say!

Noted, I wouldn't want to sign such a stupid bloody bill. Why in hell would boys want to kill with any kind of weapon ,and why would you want to encourage hunting.Time after time on these posts people protest about the hunting of animals and here you are condoning it. This is something of a contradiction of terms.Hunting with any kind of weapon is brutal and every effort should be made to discourage young people from participating in it.As they say "only in America".

As a long time Archer (paper puncher), I have to tell you this is a horrific idea. First of all I have shot targets along side 12 year olds, some very good archers, but physically incapable of pulling a bow with a sufficient pull weight that would generate a minimal release velocity required to launch an arrow at a speed sufficient to bring down a deer. That means, potentially a lot of injured animals would be left to die from secondary causes and as distasteful as bow hunting is to so many in general, this would be out right barbaric.

Why not raise the lergal age to 102? the animals will be pretty safe from accurate arrows then. Big brother at it again. Butt out and eave the kids alone.

I guess I come from a totally different world than most of you. Where I live and in much of the US there is NO age restriction. My kids started hunting with me around 11. All 3 were definitely hunting by age 12. Since there is no age restricition parents don't write down the exact age. They make a decision based on their child's mental and physical maturity and of course whether the child wants to hunt.
Now I am not a bow hunter myself, but I have 2 nephews who are avid bow hunters. (by the way some schools in our state teach archery starting in the 4th grade). They both started around age 11 or 12 and I know one of them, now 14, has killed a dozen or more deer. I still have some meat in my freezer he brought me last season. I have seen him shoot his compound bow. He is incredibly accurate. Much better than his 47 year old father.
Wild animals don't pass away in comfort at an old animals home either. They will die a violent death. A deer not killed by a hunter will eventually die from a car, other predator, starvation, or exposure.
Teaching a young person how to hunt includes teaching them respect for wildlife, the need for habitat protection, firearm safety, self sufficiency, and gets them outside and away from the TV. All good things. Turkey season in a few weeks.

Tim L., I agree with you can little children enjoy the act of being responsible for having KILLED an animal? Once upon a time, before that hunter came on the scene, that animal was a living breathing creature enjoying his life--------and the next moment he is dying in pain! How, Morris G. is that considered "good" by any standard? Religious? Moral? Spiritual?
Since you say it's ok to kill an innocent deer, and that this deer would have died by a car, by disease, by a predator, by starvation.............then it's ok to die by the hands of 'man'? Justifiable killing? What kind of logic is that? Everything dies, that does not mean you have the right to kill it!!!
If YOU are personally going to die by cancer, by Alzheimers, by a heart attack, by disease of some kind, by a car, by starvation, by a predator (human)...why not just shoot you too? After all, it might save our country untold millions in health care costs for your future needs.... this is much more 'humane' and benevolent for the rest of us too. We won't have to pay your medical costs. And, since deer don't wrack up health care costs, the argument for exterminating you is more valid in your twisted sense of logic.
It always amazes me how hunters try to justify their love of killing by saying that the deer are overpopulating, and yet, every year....licenses to kill our dwindling predators are given out to these very same hunters. How twisted is that? "The deer and elk are overpopulating" say....."We must kill the mt. lions, the wolves, the lynx, the bears, the coyotes, and any other creature that could possibly cull the herds for disease... and keep the herds healthy." Circular logic, meaning nothing.
"Wasting disease" has always been in the herds, but natural kills from predators kept it at, with trophy hunters on the rise killing the best and most healthy animals, predators on massive decline, this disease is rampant again in the deer and elk herds in the Rockies. Yes, hunters really use their brains!
Or, does it all come down to the lust for killing?
As I said before, these youngsters will be our next soldiers...perpetuating the war mentality in our country.

why do people think 12 year old "are widdle children"
maybe you and your kids were "slow" but some are growing faster than others(wait that is sexually)
not all 12 year old want to play with plastic dinosaurs. they either want to dress up and have sex, or if they come from bumblefark county they hunt.

if you care for the critters, care for them without a shred of anthropomorphizing. nothing says "I know nothing" when "that buck's children will miss him".
no they won't

of course this is a non issue if we lived 700 years ago, when you had to hunt for food.
for the ones against this strange bill I hope they/you here throw their kid against a wall for stomping on spiders or frying ants with a magnifying glass.

I don't know what to think here. so I'm just going to say "a 12 year old is to weak to pull back a bow and land a good shot"
