In August 2007, artist Guillermo Vargas shocked the art world and animal lovers with his controversial "starving dog" exhibit in Nicaragua. The cruel exhibit involved tying an emaciated stray dog in a corner with no food or water in an attempt to make

I have a better idea.
Why not let an artist starve for "art"??
Tie Guillermo Vargas in a corner with no food or water, and instruct people not to feed or care for him in any way!
See how he feels, the bastard!

I hope that this works!!! I'd rescue that dog in a minute!!! Somewhere, somehow, another dog needs to be rescued, this is NOT art!!!! This guy is an A-- for doing this to any living animal(s). "The Central American Biennial of Art has recently invited Vargas to recreate his famous exhibition using a different live dog.". They are nuts to ask him to re-do it!!!! Unreal. Keep me posted on this, will you, Cher? I feel bad for the first dog that died, and now another one??? C'mon!!!!!

Gosh, this irks me to no end. "The cruel exhibit involved tying an emaciated stray dog in a corner with no food or water in an attempt to make an ironic statement about human callousness toward homeless animals". Well, Mr. Guillermo Vargas, by not showing the world that you care, by taking CARE of homeless animals, and not KILLING them. Help your community, get involved with positive interactions whether it's animal welfare, or volunteering at a food pantry, or with children. You'd make a name for yourself with respect, by helping!! and NOT abusing an innocent animal. The world will be a better place starting with you.

I just can not understand how someone allow this to happen and called it as "art". He is not the artist, he is a murderer and anyone at Central American Biennial of Art who allowed this to happen also took part this murder. If they have any sense of moral left, they would not have done it. How can anyone just watch a dog suffering without interfering or doing anything to help? It is not just don't let this happen again, but anyone who had part in killing the first dog should be punished.

The only point Mr. Vargas makes is that he desperately needs attention. The expressions are "starving artists" and "I suffer for my art" because the artist is supposed to suffer, not the subject. I certainly hope a rescue is carried out --and that Mr. Vargas is carried out as well. Let him "suffer for his art" in prison or, better yet, in a kennel.

Gladly signed and thankfully noted!

Just after the exhibit there was such an outcry that Vargas was not allowed to display with an animal again. He then was offered an opportunity in Italy and after thousands of people contacted the gallery his exhibition was refused.

America has animal abuse laws and they should be in place regardless of where an animal is.

Guillermo Vargas studied to be a special education teacher at the Universidad Interamericana de Costa Rica, but he did not graduate. Vargas describes himself as a self-taught artist!!!
In August, 2007, Vargas displayed his "Exposición N° 1". The exposition included the burning of 175 pieces of crack cocaine and an ounce of marijuana while the Sandinista anthem played backwards. The work also included a dog tied to a wall by a length of rope with "You Are What You Read" written on the wall in dog food.
Internet petitions to prevent Vargas from participating in the 2008 Bienal Centroamericana in Honduras received over four million signatures. Vargas has endorsed the petition, saying that he, too, has signed.
This petition signed 1.534.503 people!
Boycott to the presence of Guillermo Vargas "Habacuc" at the Bienal Centroamericana Honduras:
The director of the gallery told that the animal was fed regularly and was only tied up for three hours on one day before it escaped. Vargas himself refused to comment on the fate of the dog, but noted that no one tried to free the dog, call the police, or do anything for the dog.
The Humane Society of the United States was informed that the dog was in a state of starvation when it was captured and escaped after one day of captivity.
As art historian, I signed many petitions against this "artist" but fact is that NO ONE TRIED TO FREE THE DOG.

Unfortunately, also nobody dare to start petition agains world famous artist Damien Hirst and Sothebys

Already signed. Thank you!

It is bad enough that this Vargas did this horrific so called make a statement art exhibit once. But to have the people who represent Central American Biennial of Art ask for this to be done again, I find replusive.

Is bad enough we had a person be deranged enough to do it in the first place, but after public outcry the world over, then to have these others ask again, they are worse in my book.

I think they are all a bunch of sadist that get some sick twisted thrill off of watching another living being suffer and guise their disgusting needs as art. If it was a human they'd be arrested for torture and murder so they put this poor dog there as the laws are lax for animals. I agree Jim, he is no artist and they are not an art agency.

It's not only the "artist" that has no compassion. The greed of those running the exhibit is also to blame. They're counting on people to pay money to see a dying animal that they don't have to rescue or do anything to help. Shrugs all around, it seems... I know that I wouldn't let a dog suffer like that - I'd be out of there WITH the dog, heading to the nearest vet, and then the police. Doesn't this backward country have any animal cruelty laws?

Marcia Mueller (13)

Why hasn't the embassy in Washington heard of this!?

A petition is not enough! It didn't stop Vargas or the exhibitors the last time!

Note and sign the damn thing, then send off a quick email with attachments of the photos of the last dog to be exploited and DEMAND this man be stopped and that this exhibition, under no uncertain terms, be allowed to display any animal in any condition ever again!

It only takes a few minutes to fire off a letter of polite but firm righteous indignation, attach photos and click send!

Please help!

Kind of like killing someone to protest capital punishment. Calous AND hypocritical. I wouldn't object to his displaying a dog in that condition
for an hour or two if he'd first fed it, hydrated it, and after that hour or two, cared for it and went out, found another dog, and did the same for it. But what he didn't is hypocrtical bullshit and, of course, cruelty.

Darryl McHenry (0)

I'm signing this right now. This truly disgusts me. why anyone could do this, especially to a younger dog like that is beyond me. This is the cruelest thing I have ever seen, and this guy's getting rewarded for it? this must be stopped.

Myron S (70)
Wednesday December 14, 2011, 5:57 pm
Well, obviously, I wrote my first comment before I read all the other comments. The statement does not say whether the dog was first fed, hydrated and looked at by a vet, nor how it "escaped." Just "freeing" it - back into the life that was starving it - would not have or did the dog no
good at all. It needed care and a home.

Noted, Signed & Shared! This man is no artist! Because no real artist would commit such a horrible act! A real artist respects all life-people and animals. This man is a psychopath, in every sense of the word as he shows no concern for the feelings or lives of others and I can't believe he wasn't put behind bars the first time he did this! The authorities need to stop this right now and arrest him, save this poor soul from his cruelty, and send a loud and clear message to everyone that this is nothing but horrible animal cruelty and that never again will any cruel act such as this be called art! He is nothing but a mockery not only to an artist but to anyone who is a human being!

Sorry but I need a clarification of what art is: I signed this and I also got mad when I learned of Tinkerbell, a so called artist who made "art" by killing animals and creating toys. What concerns me the most it´s not the fact these people are crazy (that´s crystal clear), but the fact that others attend their exhibitions and seem to enjoy this kind of atrocities. There is obviously something really wrong with a lot of people.
