More than 100,000 cats are dissected in classrooms across the country annually by hundreds of thousands of young adults in junior and senior high schools and colleges.

EVERY student has the right to refuse to dissect ANY organism in any class and opt for computer generated dissection models! ANY human organization will defend legally if it comes to that. I was refusing all through my Masters work in college, and they could not stop me and had to give me other options.

GRRRRRRR!!!! Pretty hard to get pissed and throw rocks at the Chinese for eating them when here the cats are brutally murdered, torn apart and thrown in the garbage!!!! All in the name of science and education??? How about come out of the stone age and make ONE video of a road kill victim!! As far as forcing kids to cut animals up??? It's ALWAYS been wrong. It's traumatizing, upsetting and horrific!! I got thrown out of class on purpose on dissection day so I didn't have to do it or just skipped out altogether. Only kids that are interested in that field of medicine should be subjected to the video as far as I'm concerned. No bloody wonder there's so many cat killings in Mexico. Humans are so screwed. Thanks Cher

I have now read of so many terrible things that humans do to animals that I am no longer shocked by this but I am very disappointed that those who bear the responsibility for teaching our children would use such methods.. Signed and noted.

I love pets. but question If future veterinarian doctors, future medical doctors and some people studies medicines, nursing, etc are not dissecting cats to understand animal and human anatomy parts by hands on work. How do future training of student?

I agree student have option to not participate in dissecting with other accommodations.

How do future Veterinarian (doctors treat YOUR BELOVED CATS, DOGS, HORSES) without exposure on operating on dead animals? Nothing can substitute a dissection of a cat or dog (Not even using digital). I sure as pet owner don't want a veterinary to operate on my family pet without live exposure to dissecting a animal. Dissecting a animal is way to improved skills and understanding in helping human or animals.

Abducting stray cats from an adoption or the sanctuaries is horrible crime and is needed the totally elimination from U.S. society.
I don't think cats 1000.000 is a number needed to learn veterinary medicine, the account does not return.

Singed and noted. Thi is so seneselss. I actually got called to my daughters school because she refused to dissect a cat or a fog. They said unless she completed the dissection she would fail her class. Well lets just say I was very angry now. I took this issue all the way to the school board and my daughtr was told "she had a civil rightt to refuse such a practice". Due to this others students stood up and refused to these dissection practices. Now Im happy to say her high school no-longer forces students to dissect helpless animals...

..Frogs are bad enough..i refused in class and was FORCED to watch as a classmate butchered him..

A comment above said its the only way for someone to properly learn about the insides so they can properly help our pets..thats true, WHEN and IF the person is in college or medical school..they can use an animal that was euthanised in a sheltor, not someones pet who was kidnapped and murdered.

Its a great way to desentize kids also, making them mutilate someones pet...giviing already sick minds a reason to go home and try it for themselves, which HAS happened btw..

N & S with a comment. This is awful. We try to teach our children to be kind to animals and not to abuse them, and they are teaching them to abuse and ultimately kill cats? That is so wrong on so many levels. No wonder violence is growing.

With advanced computer generated dissection models, there is no longer any excuse for junior high and high school students to dissect cats. Science classes need to involve students in discussion of scientific ethics, which isn't happening much now, given our cash-strapped public education. Thanks for posting this petition link, Cher, and thanks to Gina, Maggie, Barbara and Milkah for your well-thought-out comments!

It is not necessary to dissect animals to learn anatomy... schools may be able to arrange visits to labs with human cadavers (medical schools, etc) if they feel a hands on approach is necessary. It is certainly sobering to see a human laid open. To dissect a cat is not only a futile experience for children (what exactly do they learn?), it teaches them that animals are not important... it is time to change America's teaching practices and stop the illegal killing of these innocent cats!
