Hundreds of thousands of cats and dogs enter animal shelters in the UK every year, and many of them must be euthanised because there simply aren't enough good homes for them. The ones who end up in animal shelters are the lucky ones - many homeless dogs

If you have a feral cat in your neighborhood, whether you think its male or female, pregnant or nor, call your local animal rescue, or the local ASPCA. With luck, they can trap the animal and have it fixed, or have its babies brought to the right sources.

If you have feral cats living among you, the best thing to do is to contact a local animal rescue organization. They will usually lend you a trap and show you how to capture the cats. In any large area, there are low-cost spay/neuter options available. Don't call animal control unless you want the cat dead because that is what will happen. I have been trapping ferals at the parking garage where I work for the last year but, of course, there is 1 female left that keeps having kittens and I can't seem to trap her. But, I keep trying...

The three rescued female felines who share my home with me have all been spayed. And now I volunteer as a foster parent for other cats and kittens for Seattle Animal Shelter, which ensures that no feline is adopted out without being spayed or neutered. I've been working almost eight months with 7-year old Nigel to help him overcome some unappealing issues (inappropriate elimination, recurrent URIs and FIV+, obesity, etc.) so that he can be adopted. We've come a along way. If nobody else can appreciate an overweight black FIV+ black cat, who can also serve as nanny for foster kittens, I will keep Nigel as part of our family. His charming companionship is worth it all!

"if you have a feral cat in your neighborhood, whether you think its male or female, pregnant or nor, call your local animal rescue, or the local ASPCA. With luck, they can trap the animal and have it fixed, or have its babies brought to the right sources."

before you do that, check to see if - #1 - there is a feral care group in your area (and if there isn't, perhaps you might think of starting one) and contact them first, as they are both more experienced and better equipped at dealing with these special animals, and - #2 - if you DO decide to call a rescue organization, check on their policy regarding feral cats FIRST. very, very few believe in capture and release, and as adult and even as young as 3 or 4 month old feral cats are extremely unlikely to adapt to life in a human household - or even come to tolerate humans at all - the lifespan of a feral cat in most shelters tends to be a very brief one.

ferals are cats who - through no fault or choice of their own, and often for generations - have adapted to life as wild animals. they are (except in rare and wonderful cases) no more capable of living indoors or relating successfully to humans than any other wild creature. there are many guides to caring for a feral clowder, and it is neither difficult or expensive...and far more rewarding than most realise.

I'm seeing more and more animals on the streets. I picked one up the other day (a beautiful little terrier that only weighted 8 pounds) and took it to a no kill shelter. They almost didn't take it ... they said they were full. The regular shelter in our area kills after 5 days. I don't know what I'll do the next time I see a stray. It seems like the options are either let it die on the streets or let it die in a shelter. It doesn't seem fair. Abandoned pets didn't ask for this. Mankind domesticated cats and dogs so that they couldn't survive alone in the wild (at least not most of them). Mankind needs to take responsibility for the problem mankind created. That's just my 2 cents.
