There has been a global ban on ivory since 1989, but a new proposal from CITES (Convention on the International Trade in Endangered Species), proposes to make legal the ivory trade again as a way to combat the increase of poaching of the African elephant

Whilst I can see some logic in this proposal I think that the potential risks far outweigh any gains.

It may actually be better overall to allow trade in ivory that is regulated, and managed, considering that there will always be a demand. By channeling supply-demand through conservationists, there can be a supply as a result of natural death, rather than unmonitored illegal hunting. Banning only increase the demand. From what I've seen in SA it would be best to create a healthy market that is well managed by conservationists and game parks rather than an outright ban. Natural death should provide an ample supply for a healthy legal trade of ivory.

I agree with DP S.....and I'll ad this...elephants are causing great ecological damage in parts of Africa where they're protected. A certain number are "culled" every year. Their ivory could be sold, too.
