Yes, another advantage of keeping animals in zoos....the possibility to kill themselves.

RIP Tatu. He was really cute. Let's not get all zoo nuts please. If it were not for some very good zoos we might lose species to hunters & poachers. Sanctuaries are better but too many illegally hunt & poach from the sanctuaries.

My love for Orang Utans derives from my experiences at the Singapore Zoo, one of the best I've ever seen, I've been there 5 times, last one in 2001. I have here, close to me, pics of Jasmine and Manuela with Orang Utans, of me with an Orang Utan Mother and her baby...
THAT was one of the most touching experience in my life: she had her baby on her shoulders, she was looking at me… very deeply in my eyes... so tender, so delicate, DEFENCELESS!!!!
That was what, in my Thesis, was called: “Incidental Determinants to the Personality” - i.e. without THAT touching experience (at the Zoo) probably I would not be here on Care2 at 2:30 a.m. speaking of Orang Utans!!!! Actually, from THAT close contact and encounter and exchanging sincere deep feelings with our eyes, I take in great consideration our closest cousins, sharing 97% DNA with us!!!
In 2009, I went purposely to UK to meet Lone Droscher-Nielsen, the Danish "Orangutan Hero", for 2 Conferences. I often go and see them, together with Chimpanzees, at "Monkey World" Gorillas at Howletts, UK. There, in a Zoo-similar situation, i.e. in “Monkey World”, and Howletts, U.K., I had the opportunity to notice e.g. how INTENSE the parental care is in Big Apes like Orangutans, Chimpanzees and Gorillas.

Some pics of Lone Conferences, Monkey World, & Howletts are on:
