My mother lives in NC which ranks 8!!! I don't think she is aware of this. I live in Haifa, Israel, which is also quite polluted although things are a little better now.

My father's father was a coal miner in Scranton, a child. By the age of 16, he already had breathing problems, left, and did other assorted jobs. I wonder what the mortality rate is among the people who work the mines?

Not surprised by the first two - Kentucky and mountain top removal; and Ohio thanks to its industry and oil spills; not to mention that the Ohio River is one of the most polluted systems in the country. Philadelphia of course comes in third thanks to its subjugation to all that fracking.

Kentuck pollution comes from the coal fired power plants that were constructed as part of the TVA project. We could do withot most of them if the Paducah breeder reactor was closed. It wastes enormous ammounts of electricity and returns a low ammount of nuclear power.

What seems to be a problem here is that states not on that list now are prime targets for various dirty industries. Here in AZ, there are 2 sites I know of that Canadian mining companies have purchased and are propagandizing locals with dreams of jobs, while outright lying about the hazards. In fact, I've read a couple articles today about Canadian mining corporations seeking to profit in other countries by destroying the environment....they are getting pushback from locals, but we all know how that eventually turns out. I still have hope for environmental wins, though through citizen action. What's up in Canada? Who are these Corps?
