Recently, the American Museum of Agriculture purchased two healthy mules at an auction for $3,000. The price paid suggests that these two mules were in good health, at ages 28 and 32. The two were purchased, however, for the sole purpose of being killed

Hi, Cher. This has disturbed me since I read it in the Austin Statesman. Their decision to euthanize these two mules was NOT the way to go, as both of these elderly mules were in good health. As in the case of the 'artist' slowly starving the poor dog in the name of 'Art', (last year), I find this abusive, disgusting, and otherwise sickening for these mules to be displayed like this. I have NO intention of supporting this museum, and w/tell others NOT to see nor encourage this display.
From the Texas Digest: 9/18/12

Mules euthanized for museum exhibit

A West Texas museum has purchased two old mules and euthanized them for a farm display.

The American Museum of Agriculture in Lubbock said in a statement that the two mules were purchased from a local horse and mule trader after a long search for already-preserved animals came up empty.

One mule was 28 years old. The other was 32. The mules were euthanized and will eventually be put on display.

Museum officials said the mules would have otherwise been transported to Mexico and slaughtered.

Responding to criticism over the move, the museum said in the statement released Monday that the real animals will allow visitors to get a more accurate picture of how mules are used in the field.

Thanks for letting me vent about this one. Signed.!!!!!! xox

Two more signatures against this. Seriously, get an artist to create fake mules! More people are sickened by seeing mules that were purposefully killed for an exhibit and don't need real ones to understand the exhibit! So stupid and cruel.

"The museum responded to criticism with the following statement:
“To complete this exhibit, Museum Arts strongly recommended that we obtain professionally preserved mules in full harness to allow our visitors to understand how essential animal power was to this stage of American agriculture. Our board did consider the use of fiberglass replicas but were advised that the impact of the exhibit would be substantially diminished. Mr. Phil Paramore of Museum Arts said, “The reason that you use a real animal is to most accurately show the way the activity was done at the time. A fiberglass replica just doesn’t convey the same message.” [...] "

Jesus wept. What fresh hell is this? A fibre glass mule, a photo of a mule, a stuffed mule -- the only conceivable difference it makes to the exhibit is that the last involves the murder of two innocent fellow creatures. If this were perpetrated for an exhibit in an art gallery, there would be one hell of an outcry, but of course the museum did this on the QT. I imagine this is the first known case of mules killing mules. Paramore's (and there's a name for you) rationale is so vacuous and slippery that it's hard to get a grip on it. Cretin.
