Rangers at Cocos Island in Costa Rica recently discovered an endangered green sea turtle hooked by fishermen. Fortunately, the turtle was released alive, though injured.

It's disgraceful!
"And while they are killing endangered sea turtles, the primary goal of these pirate fisherman is to actually catch sharks for their fins, which are then shipped to Asia to make shark fin soup. Fisherman release long-lines that have hundreds and sometimes thousands of baited hooks inside these waters and risk unintentionally killing wildlife—not only turtles, but also whales, dolphins, and seabirds."

Noted. Petition previously signed {back in June}. Thanks so much, Cher. I'm so glad the turle was rescued and released. As for the fisherman, harsher penalties need to be in place for fishing in the protected waters. They could do more to catch the pirate fisherman. Of ocurse, putting a stop to shark finning would be a huge benefit as well.

Shark finning is of course a horrific practice where the shark is often still alive whilst its fins are hacked off and still alive when it is kicked back in the water to drown and/or bleed to death. The seminal research paper published in 2006 by Shelley Clarke estimates that 26-73 million sharks are killed every year for their fins. More than half of all known shark species are listed as 'vulnerable' or worse on the IUCN Red list of Endangered Species. This terrible practice must stop!

Littlest sea turtle spoke up and the elders listened carefully "Do not let us gather together for them to catch us all. We must learn their signs and communicate through symbols and codes.
