The high-stepping gait of horses that wins prizes in the show ring is obtained by torturing horses. It's called "soring"- and it involves whipping, kicking, shocking and using caustic chemicals on the front legs of horses in order to cause pain,

This is called "training" the horse for the love of blue ribbons and MONEY, the best horses bring in the most cash.
This morning's, articles leave me again, very disappointed in human lack of understanding that all beings on earth are sentient creatures, they feel pain. If you enjoy inflicting pain, we have a psychiatric label for that, "sadists".
You bet I signed!

can be called a "sport" this thing who requires practice so sadistic, painful and barbaric?
sicuramewnte and if you talk to a jockey or a breeder, stroking the nose of the poor horse, he would say:
this horse is better for me as a child..... damn liars
this thing is horrible and disgusting

These people are supposed to love horses??? How about making the owners do the high-stepping gait and if they don't get it right, whip them, shock them and use chemicals on their legs! See what fun it is then to win!

I was writing letters and complaining about walking horse "soring" decades ago. Finally a law was passed but it is not enforced. No wonder people are disgusted with this country and the authorities who do not do their jobs.

Cher, while I agree with your feelings about "soring", I cannot, in good conscience sign a petition that calls for BANNING anything that is something that also affects the innocent, not to mention you have a very inaccurately worded and MISLEADING title! Why should a breed of horse be banned, anymore than a breed of dog (Pitbulls) should be? BTW, even your peitition is not worded correctly in that what you are asking be eliminated is the cruel and already ILLEGAL practice of "soring" any horse, not specifically TWH's. You can't call for banning any legally held event, such as a horse show. If the show is sanctioned by the USET, then a petitition is useless, and it matters not how many signatures you end up getting from nothing more than emotion.

Leslene, first of all, who comprises this "majority" you refer to? If you think the majority of horse owners and horse lovers approves of "soring", you are absolutely wrong. If you mean the majority of people who have TWH's, you are wrong. If you mean the majority of those who have TWH's and exhibit them in shows in such places as where the TWH "World" show is (Shelbyville, Tennessee), you could be correct.

Shirley, the photo depicts a very NATURAL gait................a "running walk", which even newborn foals exhibit. What looks weird is the front hooves have thick, heavy pads, so it appears as if the front hooves are tilted upwards. They really aren't, and if you look closely at where the hoof is, above all those pads & "attachments", it is at a pretty normal "level".

Gloria mentioned this and quite accurately, the horses, the Tennessee Walking Horse BREED was developed to offer a comfortable ride over long distances by specifically, mature or even elderly riders. The "Big Lick" is a man-made gait that evolved from one that is a very natural one. Banning this wonderful breed is not the answer, but that is the TITLE of this discussion. Then there is a lick to a petition that calls for BANNING any competitions for this breed. That, as well, is unfair. It's also addressed to the wrong receipient. The former American Horse Shows Assn., now USET is the governing body for horse shows in this country. They sanction breed shows in all states. If you think they aren't doing their job, contact THEM.
