Though devocalization is so cruel it is illegal in many countries, the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) continues to condone it as a "final alternative" to manage barking and meowing. Until the AVMA changes its position on devocalization,

Sorry that took a few minutes to compose a letter, but sent through email and printed a copy for good ole snail mail. That goes out in the AM.

Though I can't say I would be fully against de-vocalization of some humans. Keep your nasty hands off dogs and cats!

Done, thanks Cher. I am sure I would agree with Kit on the humans who would be good candidates for the procedure.

Nothing is ever BLACK/WHITE and there are cases where "debarking" has worked well for both a dog and the owners.

I'm a dog-sitter and cared for a Giant Schnauzer who barked almost compulsively. Because the breeder had dealt with the problem by "debarking" her, this dog was able to live with other dogs and human companions in an urban neighborhood.

SHE thought she was making noise....in actuality, it was a kind of hoarse whisper. She was happy, healthy and it worked. HAD THEY NOT DONE THE PROCEDURE, THE DOG WOULD NEVER HAVE HAD A HOME AND WOULD HAVE BEEN EUTHANIZED.

It's like the de-clawing procedure....there are a few but valid occasions for using it. YOU AND I CANNOT MAKE JUDGMENTS FOR EVERYONE AND EVERY SITUATION.

Frankly, I prefer to trust veterinarians rather than people trying to tell others what/when they can make decisions about their animals.

My feeling is, any vet who does the debarking surgery, or any person having their animal debarked, should also have the operation done to them. Debark them. This debarking crapola is obscene.

If you have to do this to your dog... Then don't have any or don't pretend that you love animals.
People are so stupid.

No animal should be left without a means to defend itself, by devocalizing or declawing it. Noted and signed, thanks!

Disagree with Pam , there were other solutions. This was the easiest way for the humans but it is mutilation of the dog. De-clawing is just so horrible. There are many countries where this is forbidden by Law.
Agree with the frog !

There are quite a few people that could be doing with devocalisation, but hey, that's not allowed. So why is it ok to do it to animals! As with many things in the human world there are a lot of double standards!!!
