ITs so very upsetting that this goes on whats even worse is that alot of these little piglets after he castration (done by anyone and not a vet) have there entrails come out so they then take the pglets this happens to and toss them in a huge plastic crate and only when that crate is filled do they bother to euthanize the pigs it can take hour to fill the crate so the pigs are just pilled on top of one another all in severe lsft to suffer for hours the slaughter houses claim it would be to costly to euthanise one pig at a time they save money by doing them all at the same time disgusting gladly signed tweeted shared g+ thanks for the [posr Cher noted

It is amasing that humans are so sensitive to pain especially envolving their testacles. but other animals are not!! THIS PRACTICE HAS TO STOP NOW> Strong laws requiring anesthetics need to be enforced. Apporiate penalty for ignoring the law: your very own anesthetic free castration.

HOW HORRIBLE !

Diane L. (104)
Thursday November 22, 2012, 11:17 pm
Once again, the knee-jerk reactions of people who are not knowledgeable about such things is a bit surprising. "How Horrible" is a typical "reaction", and I find it a bit surprising that so many people are apparently unaware that castration has always been done sans anesthesia since veterinarians found out it is counter-productive. Unless the animal is given a sedative that makes it literally fall down (such as when gelding a horse), it would be "local" and the minute the testes were removed, so would be the anesthetic. Farm animals which are being castrated other than single animals simply couldn't be anesthetized...........the cost of having a vet administer general anesthetic and sedation and monitor the animals "INDIVIDUALLY" would be far too cost prohibitive for most farm owners.

I did some research on this topic a year or so ago and there are many websites available whch discuss this. Of course, PETA maintains castration without anesthesia is inhumane. Veterminarians who perform it say otherwise. I've seen calves castrated and they get up and return to their Mothers immediately, show little sighs if ANY, of stress and will want to nurse almost immediately. Most often, animals are castrated while still nursing. Pigs? Never before saw such a contaption such as in this video, nor are piglets routinely castrated. There is little need for it since the animals are generally sent to slaughter before becoming sexually mature in the first place.

I'm not for condoning inhumane methods, and if local anesthesia was an option, I'd be all for it, but apparently, it is not. I won't sign a petition that while in theory sounds like a good thing, in all actuality accomplishes nothing.

Diane L. (104)
Thursday November 22, 2012, 11:32 pm
BTW, I am NOT "insensitive" to what male animals go thru if they are livestock animals. I've had horses for decades, and the males were always gelded (castration). For a horse, that requires sedation and usually more than one "shot" is administered by the vet. Used to be, horses were "gelded" by ranchers themselves, probably, and in large operations probably still is done that way. Mine were done by a licensed vet, and even though it's been more than 25 years since the last time, it has not gotten cheaper by any means. I remember paying about $250 the last time, the entire procedure took about an hour from start to finish amd that's normal IF everythng goes right. If there are complications (can't locate both testes) or the animal doesn't go down "properly" it can cost much more.

Can you imagine having to pay $250 or more for each animal in a year's "crop" of livestock if they number in the hundreds? Of course the cost would be passed on to the consumer in the form of higher meat prices. If people are willing to pay $25/lb for hamburger, maybe ranchers would consider changes.

Yes Colleen , only to get rid of the gamy taste , and that have only one of 1000 male pigs. And it is a US problem, on this moment. Europe stopped the castration of pigs. As of 1 January 2012 stops castration in all 27 countries of the EU, and by 2018 it stops completely castrated.
And the prices of meat are not higher since , unfortunately in my ( vegan) eyes.
