The 5 Mile Commute - Are Electric Bikes the Answer?

The commute to work ramps up the worry factor, it makes you angrier, fatter, sleep less, more likely to divorce and triples your risk of a heart attack.

My friend rides five miles to work everyday on a regular bike. Of course Chicago is flat. But she lived in Seattle before she lived here. She used her bike there too.

Great idea - just need a protective cover for bad weather and head gear.

People are lucky if they have a small commute to work.

It sure would be nice if more people (myself included) had short commutes like that. Thank you for posting Cher.

My climate does't allow for cycling year-round, except for the most hard-core enthusiasts, but weather permitting, I cycle to work as much as possible for nearly nine months of the year. It's about 45 minutes/13 km each way, so it keeps me in shape, saves me a lot of money on gas, and reduces air pollution. I also try to do most of my errands, i.e. grocery shopping, the same way.

Obviously, if you live too far away from your place of work, it's not an option, but if you do live close by, give it a try. However, an electric bike might give people that extra push to try commuting in a more eco-friendly way.

Too many people have been conditioned to believe that a bicycle is a child's toy or that cycling is simply a recreational activity. Once you "grow up", an adult uses a car to get around. We need to break out of that mindset and start to see the bicycle as a viable transportation option, not to be ridiculed, but admired.

Hm, what about a commute by normal bike? 5 miles should be around 7 kilometres, no need to use a car for such a short distance. I have a 5 km commute, too, and always ride the bike. It is for free and you get a little workout out of it, too.
