Kenya's Wildlife Service has taken the drastic step of cutting off elephants' tusks as the only means of preventing poaching. What is an elephant without its tusks? And no one knows how these amputations will affect an elephant's place within the group

Noted, signed and commented: "By banning the import illegal ivory from of elephant tusks and rhino horns, China would become internationally recognized for a dynamic contribution to environmental and species preservation, which in turn would contribute to slowing the dangerous rate of global warming. A ban on illegal ivory would alleviate the unnecessary suffering and death of these magnificent animals, which is leading to their species' extinction. The Chinese government's current policy of allowing import of illegal ivory is shameful and gives China a bad reputation internationally."

Thanks, Cher!

Sounds like "legal" mutilition to me. Surly there is a better way to addres the poaching problem. ---What is done with the tusks that are removed??----Poachers AND the slime that buys from them should be Severely punished; how about castration and life in prison at hard labor?

If you read this last month's National Geographic, perhaps you would be hesitant to sign this petition. Until there is a way to stop the poachers from killing the elephants outright, losing the tusks seems to be the best solution in the short-term. Millions of dollars are being made from this illegal trade, and the tusks are being used for various things, including religious artwork, which is extremely delicate and fine. Right now, if ivory is found being smuggled, it is put in,a gigantic pile and burned. The elephants have already been killed by the poachers. There HAS to be a solution for poaching or the elephants will soon be extinct.

Until China stops it's continuous consumption of illegal animal parts and participation in the animal trade, our world is in grave danger of losing it's most magnificent animals, both domestic and wild. Wildlife services should not have to resort to such drastic measures as cutting off the tusks of elephants or other animals just to keep your country from facilitating the trade of ivory and/or animal parts. This leaves these animals defenseless and open to disease and infection as well as compromising their acceptance by other elephants. This cruelty needs to end and your country needs to be the first to take the vitally necessary step in ending the black market ivory and wild animal trade. You have the power to make a drastic difference in the numbers of wildlife that are endangered. Please show the world that you care and be a leader for positive change.
