They are cute to see, but it does training and some protection to know how to handle these "in-built" and natural protective spines.

They are cute. All of God's creatures are wonderful in their own way.

There is a real sadness in this article. Glad to see these animals are finding a place (and a use) in spite of their :issues".

Aww so cute and sad, but I will stick with echidnas because their spikes don't shoot out at you.

Not 'tragic' and not true that they can't give or receive love or affection. Some porkies are pets and certainly mother and baby porkies bond and give and receive mutual affection. Somebody tried to be poignant and poetic but missed.

I've seen 'porkies' on Jimmy Kimmel Live with Jack Hannah before and he said if you anger one they'll shoot their quills at you and if one gets stuck in your leg, God help you because you only have seconds to remove it and unless you're MacGyver there's no way you'll survive. Other ppl can think they're cute but I'll stay away.

We had a lot of porcupines in Nova Scotia. Being very rural the dog would sometimes have a not so pleasant up close encounter with one. Some dogs catch on quicker than others. Oh the poor nose. Many would get killed at night as they lumbered along too slowly and people in cars tended either not to see them or care and hit them. I use to collect the quills off the deceased ones, and use them into making crafts.
