Los Angeles animal shelters are currently contemplating whether or not temperament testing should be incorporated into the adoption process. This testing will screen animals for aggression in order to determine if they are capable of being adopted.

Signed. Judging by the ability of some people to test for aggression this seems to me to be an easy option and excuse for those wishing to kill the dogs.

gggrrrmmm, can't edit letter...we long for the day when NO animals are euthanised in shelters for other than deathbed mercy - seeking excuses to destroy otherwise healthy, adoptable pets is criminal indeed.

I signed this on email and have shared. I give volunteer time to the local shelter and of course each week there are all new faces. That part is pure hell, I know they were not adopted and what happened. Sometimes I wonder about where the passion and empathy is hiding. I want to believe that people care beyond their own self-centered lives, but, where, oh where, is the proof of that? Not to be in found in most shelters. Thanks Cher, could you post this about 20 times a week?

Temperament testing is not a good idea.In Australia the RSPCA is doing this and it is a real mess and is resulting in many lovely animals being killed that shouldn't have been. There is a massive negative uproar about temperament testing here and we are trying to stop it being used. Very very bad for our animal friends.

People really need to start distinguishing the word "euthanise" from "kill". Euthanasia is done to releive an animals suffering eg. a dog gets hit by a car and badly injured. Killing is done with no real purpose eg, there is no room at the pound.

I did sign this- but I do think some kind of temperament testing should be done to assist adoptees in finding easy going dogs if they are first time pet owners, and pinpoint nervous dogs that need more socialization before being adopted out.

California is a HIGH KILL State with NO TIME. In fact my little Jessie girl that is snoring next to me was doomed until the breeder of my English Setter took Jessie in for over a year and 1/2. I heard about her (Jessie in March 2008, still wasn't ready and January 2009 I said I would foster her, Jessie eyes tugged at my heart. After 2 days I knew I had to have her here and have a lazy life with TONS OF LOVE! Jessie actually rescued ME.

signed. How many PEOPLE do you know who have turned out differantly than your first judgement of them? I brought in a sweet stray mama pitt that was running around at a yard sale. She jumped into my car (I am afraid of pitts) and promptly slept on the seat. Collar, no licence ..took her to the shelter because I had no place for her and I felt surely she was missed (at least by her pups).I inquired about her a few days later. She had been put down because she "changed" once in the pound. I think she was missing her babies (no clue where they were or how she ended in the neighborhood), and was probably freaked out. I felt really bad about that.

Here in Quebec, lost, strays, homeless animals are automatically destroyed after 7 days if no one comes to redeem them. THEY DON'T GET ANY CHANCE AT ADOPTION.
Wish I could leave this godforsaken province.

Give these innocent victims a chance for the one thing that want in life is a loving fur-ever home. They are at a shelter because of some person that decided they didn't want them anymore and they don't understand what is going on. This isn't an animal problem. the problem is caused by people that take them to a shelter or dump them somewhere or just move and leave these babies to fend for themselves or tied up to die a horrible slow death. Give them more than their families did, they deserve it.
