It is no secret that too many dogs end up in animal shelters. Unfortunately, most of the dogs that end up in animal shelters find themselves there because they are unwanted. Most owners who give up their dogs do so because they simply don't want them

My shelter has a general policy about pre-Christmas adoptions. If a couple comes into the shelter looking for a kitten or puppy as a surprise for their child, we ask that they bring the child in. First, you don't know if the child will like YOUR choice, second, who knows if the kitten/dog will respond to the child. Lastly, the parents may think is a good idea, but I have seen many children under 8 panic when they feel a kittens claws, or they climb on the child's back, and the kid freaks.
These are the three reasons we do not generally adopt out before Christmas.. If the customer has adopted from us before, and this is a second animal, this is a different story.

Signed! And does anyone remember the "Mutts" comic strip that ran on Christmas a few years' back? Santa Claus dropped a puppy off at a house and the puppy was played with for a while- but once the family grew tired of him, he was chained in the backyard and forgotten. The next Christmas, Santa saw the poor dog, and took him back! I cried like a baby reading that- the formerly neglected dog was now happily snuggled in Santa's sleigh- wish real life could work like that...

Let's help all remember... an animal is not a toy. An animal is a life that needs love and nurturing and friendship and companionship. They don't require batteries, they require food and water and snacks. They don't get tossed about and discarded, they get belly rubs and head pats. Animals don't speak with human words...they speak with compassionate eyes.
Merry Christmas to all people and animals of care2.

signed. nobody needs to adopt a pet for another person. they are not toys that can be put in a closet when you're bored with them.
in jan shelters and rescues are over run with pets that weren't wanted but were gifts. believe it or not these are the good people the slobs tie them up or dump them just to get rid of them.

Noted and signed. This is also true of cats. The rescue group I volunteer with has a policy that whomever the cat/kitten is for must fill out the application not the person wanting to give the gift. Dogs and cats are not objects that can be cast away when you're tired of them. They are living beings who deserve love and repsect to match that which they give. Thanks so much, Cher.
