Despite more than 1 in 5 youth needing mental health services, less than 25% actually receive them. Instead, many suffer in silence due to the shame, stigma and lack of care that exists. What's more, suicide is the second leading cause of death

Signed and confirmed. Thank you so much for this. This is an issue very dear to my heart since my sister has mental health issues and it's been a struggle for years getting her the proper diagnosis and medications.

I believe if you can reach these issues earlier in life, the better...you hear so many stories of troubled youth out of control who feel isolated and suffer in silence who then turn to violence and at times animal cruelty...though sometimes these teens can be beyond help--just damaged goods even with help... sadly we live in a cruel world.

Bullshit? Is that supposed to be 'cool' to grab youth's attention? Weird.
'More than 1 in 5 youths need mental health services? Says who? What statistic is that from? I can guarantee you the field of Psychiatry is behind that, since 'anxiety, depression, bipolar, schizophenia, etc. are all terms created by the single field of Psychiatry. Not Psychology or Neurology or family doctors practicing medical science. Psychiatry has 374 'mental illnesses' aka 'mental diseases' aka 'mental disorders' which they diagnose you with using checklists of behaviors and 'symptoms' yet do not have a SINGLE objective laboratory test to back it up with.

(No one is saying mental or emotional trauma or distress doesn't exist or isn't real or cannot be severe...or that suicide doesn't occur).

.“There are no objective tests in Psychiatry---no X-ray, laboratory, or exam finding that says definitively that someone does or does not have a mental disorder.” Dr. Allen Frances, Professor Emeritus of Psychiatry

"No single reproducable abnormality in any (brain) transmitter or any of it's enzymes or receptors has been shown to cause any psychiatric disorder" Dr. Stephen M. Stahl, Psychiatrist

"'Bipolar' is thrown around like water---you've got 'bipolar', I have 'bipolar'...it's a lot of hokum" Dr.Walter Afield, Psychiatrist

“Most of the patients I see who have been misdiagnosed have been told they have bipolar disorder. Then they’re put on these devastating medications and condemned to a life as a psychiatry patient.” Dr. Bessel Van der Kolk, Psychiatrist

(regarding Schizophrenia)..."Overall, I think the concept is scientifically meaningless, clinically unhelpful and ultimately has been damaging to patients" Dr. Richard Bentall, Psychologist

"These labels (of 'bipolar') are being applied to younger and younger children which I think is a sad case. I'm not sure I agree with any of those labels (bipolar for adults) to begin with, let alone for them to be applied universally to young kids" Dr. Gary Reulas, Neuropsychologist

"Cocaine addicts prefer Ritalin if they can get it in a snortable form. It's longer acting, they get the same high, the same quick high as cocaine, they can't tell the difference" Dr. Gary Kohls, M.D.

"We have a (psychiatric) diagnosis for everything and everybody. We don't aim to make people healthy or even allow as to how they may be healthy, but we call them sick" Dr. Ronald Ricker, Psychiatrist

"Rates of ADHD have tripled in the last 15 years -- precisely because many kids are being diagnosed with fake ADHD to make them eligible for medications and/or extra school services. What used to be a $70 million dollar/year market in stimulant drugs has rapidly ballooned to $7 billion/year under the pressure of aggressive and misleading drug company marketing to doctors, parents, teachers, and patients" Dr. Allen Frances, Professor Emeritus of Psychiatry

"The biochemistry and pharmacology of Ritalin is exactly the same as cocaine, except for the speed of onset" Dr.Warren Levin, M.D.

"The longer a child is on Ritalin, the more the liklihood that they may become addicted, whether it's Ritalin, or Concerta, or Adderall, or a number of other drugs" Dr. David Egner, Psychologist

"Some of the side-effects (of psychiatric drugs) that have become a concern lately are suicide, increased risk of suicide, increased risk of homicide... " Dr. Matt Irwin, M.D.

"The current fad in making (psychiatric) diagnoses is the 'chemical imbalance' theory" Dr. Edward H. Drummond, Psychiatrist

"The more (psychiatric) diagnoses, the better. Everyone gets one. Everyone gets billed. Everyone leaves with a prescription". Dr. Keith Ablow, Psychiatrist

"In the absence of a proven 'chemical imbalance' for which (psychiatric) medications are quote 'rebalancing' or 'fixing', the medcations are in fact toxic". Dr. Grace Jackson, Psychiatrist

"The concept of depression has become so broad that all you need is five symptoms for two weeks" Dr. Patricia Casey, Professor of Psychiatry

"The mental health establishment has been wildly successful in leading the public to believe mistakenly that psychiatric diagnosis is a science...the drug companies have happily promoted that view because it helps them with their multi-billion-dollar business of marketing drugs for specific diagnoses" Dr. Paula J. Caplan, Psychologist

"So what causes the suicides (of schizophrenics)? The evidence points to the antipsychotics (medication).. In placebo controlled double blind trials these drugs show an excess of suicides and suicidal acts with drugs like Zyprexa having the highest suicide and suicidal act rate in clinical trial history" Dr. David Healy, Psychiatrist

"There are no specific lab tests that are made to diagnose psychiatric disorders. Its really sort of diagnosis by committee...haggling and arguing over how should we describe how this disorder is going to be and what it should look like" Dr. Mary Braud, Psychiatrist

"The (psychiatric mental disorder') diagnosis is based on arbitrary symptom lists that are non-specific and almost always gleaned from self-report and pure speculation. We have no way of objectively validating anything" Dr. John Sorboro, Psychiatrist

"We will once again try to fashion (psychiatric) drugs to fit some construct that we have labeled as a disorder in order to target a potentially lucrative market" Dr. Sandra Steingard, Psychiatrist

"It's not really disputed in Psychiatry (that) if you take enough Ritalin for long enough, you're at high risk of becoming paranoid and psychotic" Dr. Colin A. Ross, Psychiatrist

"The claim that depression is a disease is propaganda promoted by Psychiatry and the state and marketed by drug companies"---Dr. Ron Leifer, Psychiatrist

"If you look at the studies, (antidepressants) are hardly any better than a sugar pill, and much more dangerous" Dr. Peter Breggin, Psychiatrist

“…the carefully crafted image of Psychiatry as a progressive medical science has come to supplant the reality of an unscientific, pseudo-medical specialty with imprecise and arbitrary diagnoses and questionably effective medications fraught with toxicities and side effects.” Dr. Philip Sinaikin, Psychiatrist

“We can manufacture enough diagnostic labels of normal variability of mood and thought that we can continually supply medication to you…But when it comes to manufacturing disease, nobody does it like Psychiatry.”-----Dr. Stefan Kruszewski, Psychiatrist

"Some of the side-effects (of psychiatric drugs) that have become a concern lately are suicide, increased risk of suicide, increased risk of homicide... " Dr. Matt Irwin, M.D.

N&S Much of these mental problems stem for the food and medicines given to everyone throughout the years and the fact it is in the drinking water also.

Kenneth---there is some truth to your long-statement. Other people can pick out things about us that we don't notice as being a bit odd or what society might name as not the norm. Where do we draw the line is the question.
The hoarder for example could be named as mentally ill but generally only a menace to themselves but when they start affecting their neighbors with rats, roaches and pollution, then some action must be taken.
Each time something terrible happens like mass shootings or domestic murders, those people exhibit pathological tendencies that were never recognized early enough.
There is a difference between someone who prefers solitude than someone who doesn't like solitude but is a social-cripple.
It's so complicated and what makes it all the more dangerous a world....are guns.

"During the past two decades, child Psychiatry has already provoked three fads -- a tripling of Attention Deficit Disorder, a more than 20-times increase in Autistic Disorder, and a 40-times increase in childhood Bipolar Disorder."
