Each year, Americans throw away millions of tons of food with only a small percentage of it being incinerated or composted. The fact that millions of people in this country are starving and Americans are throwing away tons of food is already concerning

The biggest problem are our urban areas, and large cities which constitute a large portion of the population.

Thanks Cher, San Antonio TX is doing this city wide! I moved to Colorado Springs a little over a year ago, and they don't even offer recycling everywhere, yet alone composting! That's SO backwards! Signed, Noted and Fighting for this!

This is a great idea. Composting really does create beautiful soil for the gardens.

Signed and noted. We need backyard composting and city-wide compost pick-up everywhere. An increasing number of cities have composting programs, but it really must be a national effort to be as effective as possible!

signed and noted.. One of the many encounters of poverty: I was on holiday in Southern Africa and when I entered a restaurant children plead to me if they may have the left-overs of my pizza if I had my fill.. I you come across situations like these you feel ashamed to tell those children that in our country we have so much food, that we throw it away.. We may not eat all food, but composting the left-overs to grow food again feels better then burning it.

We have this service in Australia and it seems to work. But many people spoil it for others. One of my neighbours does not want to pay the $75 annual fee and fills up other people's composting and trash bins, even recycling bins during the night with garden composting material. My bins were left behind by the council truck a few times until I emptied the trash and the recycling bin out at 2am to check what is in my bin. I dumped everything that was not mine onto the road and my stuff went back into the bins. Sure,Viet Charlie picked it up and had a big bag sitting near to his letter box for a couple of days, but suddenly it disappeared, I guess they dumped it somewhere else. As for the council, I complained at, but I was told to ring back in an hour because she was on a coffee break, they clock in at 9.00am. So, they have a 90 min. coffee break to wake up. I told her in no uncertain f-language where to go. But at collection date at 7 am or later I had conversations with the truck drivers of various collection projects (trash, recycling and composting). They claim, inspectors are actually checking bin contents at random, but admitted they had never ever seen one. One even said, everything goes to land fill. So why are we paying so much?

As for the stacking, up to 1 cubic meter composting enclosures (pictured), they are such a good idea. I used them for the last 25 years, I made 3 of them and they are serving me well and were easy to build. I have an Acad drawing which I will try to put onto my profile soon.
