BAD, BAD idea to open up naval waters to commercial shipping OR vice versa! Think about it logically! That could be a serious disaster, same as some air lanes are off limit to commercial aviation or private planes.
Facts are that blue whales normally don't swim near the surface of the water and their normal swimming patterns are a mystery. Opening up yet more lanes for marine navigation is NOT the answer to preventing accidents. More research on the habits of the blue whale would be a step in the right direction.

Charlene, most of us would, and that includes me. Did you bother to actually read what posted? The writer here has a good heart and means well, but sometimes doesn't post factual information. Here's a link to a DIFFERENT discussion/article in Care.2 and this one seems a bit more factual and makes more sense..........

It makes no sense to open up NAVAL waters to commercial shipping with the "goal" to protect whales. The approach should be to REMOVE shipping from the waters that whales swim in, with particular attention paid to the routes they use when migrating to calve.

Signed and glad to donate the $5 to GreenpeaceUSA for their campaign when this request appeared. Blue whales need all the help they can get on this long migration route so I hope Greenpeace has success with this common sense proposal. Thanks for posting this. I'm a bit late getting to this, but better late than not at all.
