SAMPLE LETTER (please personalize)

Dear Iditarod Supporter:

Iditarod dogs suffer horrendous cruelty every day of their lives. Please end your organization's support of this event. Mushers have drowned, shot, bludgeoned and dragged many dogs to death. For example, Iditarod musher Dave Olesen drowned a litter of newborn puppies. Another musher got rid of unwanted puppies by tying them in a bag and tossing the bag in a creek. Mushers even have a saying about not breeding dogs unless they can drown them:“ Those who cannot drown should not breed.” Terrible things happen to dogs during the Iditarod. This includes: death, bloody diarrhea, paralysis, frostbite (where it hurts the most!), bleeding ulcers, lung damage, pneumonia, ruptured discs, viral diseases, kennel cough, broken bones, torn muscles and extreme stress. At least 142 dogs have died in the race, including four dogs who froze to death in the brutal cold. Veterinary care during the Iditarod is poor.

In the 2012 race, one of Lance Mackey's male dogs ripped out all of his 16 toenails trying to get to a female who was in heat. This type of broken toenail is extremely painful. Mackey, a four-time Iditarod winner, said he was too stubborn to leave this dog at a checkpoint and veterinarians allowed Mackey to continue to race him. Imagine the agony the dog was forced to endure.

Here's another example: Veterinarians have allowed dogs with kennel cough to race in the Iditarod even though dogs with this disease should be kept warm and given lots of rest. Strenuous exercise can cause lung damage, pneumonia and even death. To make matters worse, kennel cough is a highly contagious disease that normally lasts from 10 to 21 days. Iditarod dogs endure brutal training.

Jeanne Olson, who has been a veterinarian in Alaska since 1988, confirmed the brutality used by mushers training dogs for the Iditarod. She talked about dogs having cracked ribs, broken jaws or skulls from mushers using two-by-fours for punishment. In an article published by the University of Alaska, Dr. Olson said, "There are mushers out there whose philosophy is...that if that dog acts up, I will hit that dog to the point where it would rather die than do what it did, 'cause the next time it is gonna die.'"

I had wondered about the history of the Iditarod and recently learned that it began for a remarkable cause. Nome Alaska was seeing an outbreak of diphtheria in many children. The doctor knew getting a serum was the only chance these children had to survive. Finally a message was sent out and the serum began it's journey, but as that winter was extremely severe all the ports into Nome were inaccessible and the serum was delivered to Neena (sp?) Alaska. From there it began a long ride to Nome and the children in need. A plan was devised to for a relay, each team of dogs would take the serum for 30 miles in one of the coldest winters on record. No dogs were hurt but a few were recognized as heroes. It's a much longer story with many adventures along the way. But this sure didn't begin with cruelty to animals, that's the modern version.
Signed.

Evil scum! Anyone who deliberately drowns a puppy deserves to suffer the same fate.

Yes, I got the legal action one from the welding co. in Alaska - Funny ! I think the anger is good = conflict in themselves. We were polite and just presented the facts. Nothing to get really angry about.

This likely happens to any sled dog teams- so if you visit Alaska, Canada, do NOT go on a dog sled ride, or you are contributing to this horrible industry.

I sometimes wonder just how deep into the cess-pit of cruely, brutality, inhumanity and damn-right abuse some people will sink, all for the sake of greed, fun, sport and entertainment. These so-called 'mushers' and breeders are nothing but brain-dead, heartless, soul-less morons with egos far bigger than their compassion, their empathy and cetainly their moral ethics as they haven't got ANY. Low-life scum, every last one of them, nothing but animal abusers and torturers. Long may they rot in hell.

ok I know people are going to go ape shit on me but in 2006 I went to Alaska to watch the Iditarod. The ceremonial start is in Anchorage, the official start is in Wasilla, then the finish is in Nome. I was there for over a month, All of the dogs I witnessed loved what they were doing, most were hard to handle because they were so excited to get going, the mushers I met were passionate about their animals. I watch the race on the official web cast, so I can see individual mushers and their teams in real time, I check to see where the racers are and how many dogs are on the team at each check point, many times mushers leave their dogs at check point to be picked up if the dogs health is compromised. I just received an email asking for volunteers to help check in the teams and inspect people or animal injuries. the people have to scratch the race due to their own physical limitations against mother nature, more so than the dogs. I hope I do not get deleted from anybody friend list, I do appreciate what care2 and its members accomplish, I do appreciate the passion, laughter, and tears that many articles invoke. I just cannot believe that Lance Mackey would treat his team like that. His dogs are world renowned athletes. I just bought a book that was inspired by Jeff King called Elim by Joan Jackson, a young pup that followed Jeff King for 30 miles, then he contacted the owner to see if he could keep him and put him as part of the team, Elim, The Determined Athlete, is based on a true story and told according to the pup. Elim, The Determined Athlete, reveals the real reason a four month old Alaska village husky joined champion musher, Jeff King's team on the Iditarod trail. Uplifting and motivating, the reader learns about setting goals, working hard, proving oneself, and ignoring peers' rebuffs. Jeff King assisted the pup in becoming a real athlete - a sled dog, instead of just another basketball wanna-be. Softcover, 32 pages. Color illustrations. Written by Joan Jackson, I thought it had great messages for my daughter. I am so discouraged over this issue.
