"We live just like the white folks," permaculturist Arvo Thomson comically replies, when I ask if he has enough power in his off-grid home for basic necessities like refrigeration. I hang up the phone smiling, knowing that my search has ended.

Humility indeed. To see how gifted we (especially Americans) are, how we squander, abuse and manipulate gifts freely available, upsetting the balance and counter-balance needed for survival and replenishment, without a second thought to long-term consequences (too busy fast-tracking, acquiring more, when the quick-fix will do for now), there is obviously much wisdom in and practice of a return to nature and the basics.

"Living in Arvo Thompson's house is like living in tune with the cycles of nature". "You take what the land gives you".
