Humans can explore space and map DNA. Surely we can and must do the right thing for these beagles. We don't have to kill, cage, and/or abuse defenseless animals. Abuse and inhumane treatment of all species finds a home in every country. We must each do as much as possible to expose and stop inhumane treatment of animals including lab testing too. Sufficient pressure (thousands signed the petition) was put on the military to stop testing on chimpanzees that they finally retiring theirs to a animal retreat for animals used for testing. I recently learnt that AstraZeneca is closing its breeding facility in Örkelljunga, Sweden. However, I was deeply saddened to hear that hundreds of beagles from the facility may be shipped to UK laboratories and used in cruel animal tests.

Huntingdon Life Sciences, a laboratory that AstraZeneca has worked with in the past, is notorious for its poor standards and shocking treatment of animals. Undercover investigations have found repeated animal welfare violations, with recorded instances of workers punching animals in the face, dissecting animals while they were still conscious and showing up to work intoxicated. No animal deserves this kind of abuse, and animals in other laboratories suffer similarly.

These beagles, who have had the most awful start in life, deserve a second chance. I implore you to allow them to be adopted into loving homes rather than shipping them thousands of miles to UK laboratories. Beagles are friendly and intelligent and make loyal companions, and there is no reason why these dogs should not be successfully rehabilitated as companion animals similar to many of the other AstraZeneca beagles. If, as you say, the dogs' welfare is your "utmost priority", please prove it by allowing all the remaining beagles to be put up for adoption into loving homes.
