In the last decade, a market has emerged in Asia for ray gill plates as a tonic, which has no basis in official Traditional Chinese Medicine and no proven health benefits.

I am sick and tired of reading about the abusive habits of those who practice this kind of nonsensical medicine. It seems no animal however endangered is safe in their diabolical search for medicines. It is every bit as wicked and evil as the lab workers in their quest for more and more sadistic experiences at the expense of innocent animals.

I saw this on tv. It is a shame. Some people will eat other people if they thought it would bring youth and good health. It is horrible and disgusting. More than anything I think China needs more education about nature, environment, animals and health. They are listening to too many false wivestales.

Noted, signed, twittered and google shared. These beautiful and gentle creatures need to be protected at all costs. Why must everything beautiful, precious or natural be under constant threat. This world cannot afford to keep going at this rate.

"Imagine swimming in your home, just under the waterline, on a beautiful morning in the tropical seas of Eastern Indonesia. The water is so clear and calm, you can see your reflection on the surface above. Your body is designed perfectly to glide through the tranquil, turquoise waters with minimum effort - like a giant bird in a big, blue liquid sky. Filter feeding as you gently go, suddenly you hear the abrupt buzzing noise of an approaching propeller. Just as you recognise the sound, you feel the sharp pain of a steel rod spearing through your body. It enters your back, and embeds itself in your internal organs. The agony is so intense, you thrash in every direction to escape. But you are held fast, then dragged towards a floating object on the surface. The more you struggle, the more the spear barb tears at your flesh. For 30 minutes, you fight for you life, growing weaker as the crystal clear water stains red with your own blood. On the surface, you see and hear the human crew as they chant an ancestral song they believe will stop you from escaping. A strange steel wire passes over your head and holds you in its deadly loop before another sharp stabbing pain first blurs your vision, then scrambles your brain - a small, steel spike has been jabbed into your head as a final death knell. You know nothing now, as your magnificent black-winged body is hooked and gaffed and dragged on to the boat. You are dissected: your head, wings and tail cut off, your gills torn from your throat. You are a manta ray - magnificent no more - pulled from the sea in a callous act of barbarity to satisfy the dubious trade in Chinese medicine.
